The weather channel could show non stop reruns of Gilligan’s Island and all they would do is increase their forecasting accuracy.
I’ll gladly claim ignorance or innocence or something…..But how was Sandy classified when it made landfall? Not a hurricane? I’m not an expert, and they call it Hurricane Sandy… Help me.

Instead, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami determined that the storm had transitioned into a hybrid storm known as a “Post-Tropical Storm” shortly before landfall. That change was made because the storm exhibited characteristics similar to the Nor’easters that frequently lash the Northeast coast during the fall and winter — such as a broad expanse of wind and precipitation with the strongest rains and winds far-removed from the center of the storm. In a purely tropical storm system, the strongest winds and rain are located in a small core close to the storm center.
Also, it did not at landfall have hurricane force winds.
In Australia cyclones (= your hurricanes / or Asian typhoons) rapidly abate once they hit land, the centre “eye” dissipates and the barometric pressure rises above the nominated limit for cyclones and winds drop below minimum cyclone wind speeds, they are normally renamed “Tropical low, ex cyclone or heavy rain depression”, hope this helps.
That said, I would ask Steve for some clarification on “?No sea level rise on the west coast of the US or Canada for three decades” and some supporting info. It is my understanding that average sea level rise has been fairly constant at ~1.7 mm / year for some time – for 3 decades that is ~ 51 mm or near as damn to 2 inches in your quaint units, I do not understand how this is possible??

The rock pools I used to play in as a child are still there. I remember them well enough. If the sea has been rising at 1.7mm per year or even twice that, it seems that at least 100-200 years are needed for humans to even perceive such slow changes, but we don’t live that long anyway.
Steve, we both know it is not possible to see a couple of inches change in that time lapse photo and Will, agreed the rock pools may still look pretty much the same.
