Last week they told us the drought in the SW was going to get worse. This is our second huge snowstorm since they made that forecast.

This week they predicted a big snowstorm for DC which never materialized. They can’t forecast six hours out, but they do know what the weather will be like in 50 years.

Ten thousand years ago, most of Canada was covered with ice. This would have reflected most of the summer sunlight received there back into space, and would have had a huge cooling effect on the planet. The 1990 IPCC report correctly showed this, with temperatures about 4C cooler than the Holocene Maximum.

But the new hockey stick shows temperatures 10,000 years ago within 0.1C of the Holocene Maximum. This is nonsensical and impossible. That huge mass of ice would have kept the planet very cool.

But it is worse than it seems. The latent heat of melting ice also would have had a huge cooling effect. Between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago, most of the ice melted. This would have dominated the energy balance and kept air temperatures very cool.

Additionally, Paul Homewood points out that the melting ice would have flowed into the oceans and cooled sea surface temperatures, compounding the cooling effect.

There is a zero percent chance that the new hockey stick is correct – as they have run afoul of several fundamental principles of physics. Temperatures 10,000 years ago could not have been close to the Holocene maximum.

In 1940, Greenland was approaching a catastrophe.

The Muir Glacier retreated eight feet per day between 1794 and 1879

As you enter Glacier Bay in Southeast Alaska you will cruise along shorelines completely covered by ice just 200 years ago.

Explorer Captain George Vancouver found Icy Strait choked with ice in 1794, and Glacier Bay was barely an indented glacier. That glacier was more than 4000 ft. thick, up to 20 miles or more wide, and extended more than 100 miles to the St.Elias Range of mountains.

By 1879 naturist John Muir found that the ice had retreated 48 miles up the bay. By 1916 the Grand Pacific Glacier headed Tarr inlet 65 miles from Glacier Bay’s mouth.

Met Office forecast for Summer 2007

The latest seasonal forecast from the Met Office issued today, reveals that this summer is, yet again, likely to be warmer than normal.

Following the trend set throughout 2006 and the first part of 2007, seasonal forecasters say there is a high probability that summer temperature will exceed the 1971-2000 long-term average of 14.1 °C.

They also suggest the chances of temperatures similar to those experienced in 2003 and 2006 are around 1 in 8.

A local third grader who took cupcakes to class in celebration of his 9th birthday was told a topping on those cupcakes was inappropriate.

Last week, Casey Fountain’s third-grade son had a birthday party at his school in Caro. His wife decided to whip up 30 cupcakes for the boy’s classmates. She topped the treats with plastic army guys like the ones countless boys and girls have played with for decades. Fountain says he never thought his innocent act of party planning would lead to controversy.

Fountain says the principal of Schall Elementary School called him personally and told him that dressing the cupcakes with soldiers was, in the principal’s words, “insensitive” considering recent gun-related tragedies. Fountain says the principal was referring to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

That didn’t sit too well with Fountain, and he says his frustration prompted him to call TV5.

The green plastic figurines are representations of WWII soldiers, and Fountain said he doesn’t see a comparison to Sandy Hook.

Knut Espen Solberg, leader of ‘The Melting Arctic’ project mapping changes in the north, said the remains uncovered in past weeks in west Greenland may also be new evidence that the climate was less chilly about 1,000 years ago than it is today.
