NSIDC : Arctic Was Ice Free In The Past

The latest hockey stick shows that current warming is unprecedented. Dr. Walt Meier from NSIDC says something different.

The current Greenland warming, while not yet quite matching the temperatures of 70 years ago …..

“Examination of several proxy records (e.g., sediment cores) of sea ice indicate ice-free or near ice-free summer conditions for at least some time during the period of 15,000 to 5,000 years ago”

In 1940, Greenland was approaching a catastrophe.

The Courier-Mail  Monday 6 May 1940

By far the largest number of local glaciers in north-east Greenland had receded very greatly during recent decades, and it would not be exaggerating to say that these glaciers were nearing a catastrophe.

In 1922, Arctic melt had made it unrecognizable

In 1911, glaciers were disappearing

The Muir Glacier retreated eight feet per day between 1794 and 1879

As you enter Glacier Bay in Southeast Alaska you will cruise along shorelines completely covered by ice just 200 years ago.

Explorer Captain George Vancouver found Icy Strait choked with ice in 1794, and Glacier Bay was barely an indented glacier. That glacier was more than 4000 ft. thick, up to 20 miles or more wide, and extended more than 100 miles to the St.Elias Range of mountains.

By 1879 naturist John Muir found that the ice had retreated 48 miles up the bay. By 1916 the Grand Pacific Glacier headed Tarr inlet 65 miles from Glacier Bay’s mouth.

off topic but another huge BS story at yahoo:

“Research released Thursday in the journal Science uses fossils of tiny marine organisms to reconstruct global temperatures back to the end of the last ice age. It shows how the globe for several thousands of years was cooling until an unprecedented reversal in the 20th century.”

Greenland weekly snow cover since January 1972

There was much less snow cover in the 70 than today.Without snow you can’t build glaciers.

There is a good reason it’s called dope.

If you live in a sewer long enough, you can’t smell it anymore.
There’s still hope if you think it stinks.
Denver, I hear your toilet flushing…

The Denver Boulder toilet flushed many years ago. Now their trying to drag the rest of us into the filth.

I remember seeing a tv show about a sailing ship wrecked in the north west passage – wish I’d paid more attention.

Simply demonstrates variable Arctic ice is nothing new if 19th century sailing vessels almost made it through the “passage”.

  6. Bill Sokeland says:

The current warm up will have severe effects for Alaska and the Arctic for next 5 to 7 years. Alaska needs to import more beef.
