The winter storm which hit the Arctic this week broke up the ice in the Chukchi Sea, and it brought below freezing temperatures and snow. These two factors may well lead to 2012 being the shortest melt season on record (date of minimum minus date of maximum.)

With cold temperatures over the ice, it is likely that the minimum will be reached relatively early.

Record August cold headed for the eastern half of the US.

This is when they shift back to “the US is only 1.5% of the globe” mode, after spending the last few weeks telling us that it is 100% of the globe.

When we do an apples to apples comparison of all-time record maximums set or tied for stations which have long term records (since 1900) – we see that they are in steep decline since the 1930s.

Warmists don’t like this, so they cheat. They throw in a lot new stations which are guaranteed to have recent record maximums. The next graph shows the same plot for all USHCN stations, regardless of age. Record maximums appear to be increasing, but it is only because they added stations with no data from the 1930s. (Even with their cheating, recent years are no where near as hot as the 1930s.)

The next graph is the difference between the two graphs above, showing the error in the second graph. Note that 2007 had over four thousand potentially fake record maximums.

But it is worse than it seems. Most of Jeff Master’s records are much shorter than the USHCN stations at the same location, so his error is much larger than the graph above.

It is interesting how they find very obscure issues as excuses to make corrections, and ignore huge issues like the one described here.

Temperatures today were about 20 degrees cooler than 76 years ago.

NOAA says 2012 is the hottest summer ever.

Stations with long term records show that Oklahoma maximum and minimum temperatures have been in decline since 1900.

The hottest year (by far) was 1954.

Interesting to note that Oklahoma minimum temperatures in 2011 were in the bottom ten, including the coldest Oklahoma temperature ever recorded, -31F on February 10, 2011.

The town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma reported a morning low of -28 — yes, that’s Oklahoma, not Minnesota — at their official station, which would set the all-time record low temperature for the entire state of Oklahoma. (Their previous record was -27 set in Vinita, Okla. in 1905 and Watts, Okla. in 1930.) NOAA says they have to inspect the equipment to make sure it’s in proper working order so at this point the record is preliminary.

But! There is a second contender. A non-FAA station in Nowata, Okla. reported a temperature of -30.5 degrees. NOAA is checking that one too. Suffice to say, there is pretty good evidence that Oklahoma has a new state record and Vinita and Watts are going to have try harder to get back into the books.

This joint agency effort takes a coordinated look at strategies needed to meet California’s multiple air quality and climate goals well into the future.

The graph below shows the ratio of record maximums to record minimums for all long term USHCN weather stations. The year 1939 had the highest ratio, and the 1960s and 1970s were among the lowest.

That is why alarmists ignore weather prior to the 1970s or 1960s.

During the record year 1939, the US also had 185,000 fires – compared to 40,000 so far in 2012.
