They accomplished this by an impressive 2 degrees (3.6F) of data tampering, lowering 1940 temperatures and increasing present temperatures.
So were the Climategate scientists justified in removing the 1940s Arctic spike? Scientists in 1940 reported 6C warming and rapidly disappearing ice. The warming was real, and modern climate scientists are trying to rewrite history.

The original rural data from Arctic, not influenced by UHI, also raised the question. If the 1930s are the warmest in Arctic, how can today’s global temperature be so much warmer than in was in the 1930s and at the same time Arctic is colder today than it was in the 1930s? Something is wrong with the data?

This has become a fairly standard procedure within climate science. If the real data doesn’t match the hypothesis, just change the “real” data until it does.
