NOAA says many years have been colder, because they believe the freezing point of water has changed.

Is the “Ship of Fools” on the Great lakes? I heard Reggie is looking for a new area to test out his new torch

  2. philjourdan says:

I hear the UP is due more snow this week. Makes me glad I do not live there.

  3. Crashex says:

The amount of ice now is 5 weeks past the average trend. Do we have ice remaining on the lakes into June?

  4. tom0mason says:

This year is shaping up to be only the 5th or 6th hottest ever.

  5. Morgan says:

Yeah, but 80% of the lakes are 97% ice free. Only 20% of the lakes are still frozen. The IPCC predicted that by this time of year 5 lakes will be melted with an error bar of 2 lakes, so we are within the predicted range and only 1 lake away from the median.

  6. Billy Liar says:

Meanwhile, in Alaska, it’s only 6-10 days to ice out:

    • An Inquirer says:

I cannot find on that website the ice out date for years past for the Nenanaak Ice Classic. Do you know where those historic dates could be found?

      • Mike D says:

Go to the brochure tab and download it. The 2nd page is a calendar with past dates and times. Oddly, it looks like the ice breakup tends to take the weekend off. Though that’s just a function of where those days fall this year.

  7. Mike says:

Great Lakes ice cover is actually 3805% above normal. The data shows mean ice coverage on the Great Lakes for the 4/23 date is 0.84%. As of 4/23/2014, 32.81% of the Great Lakes were still covered by ice.

  8. B.C. says:

I’m still having problems making ice in my oven. Perhaps Mann, Trenberth and Hansen can give me some pointers?

  9. John F. Hultquist says:

True color satellite views (MODIS) of the Lakes can be found here:

Lake Erie still has some ice tucked along the eastern end. Lake Simcoe, about 50 miles north of Toronto, is still ice covered. This is a popular spot and someone likely has records of ice-free dates. I did not find anything interesting. Some sites are reporting ice conditions for fishing purposes and are for January of this year. Other sites are a year or two old. I expected to find something like the Nenana Ice Classic (see Billy’s link above). No luck.

    It remains chilly in Ontario.

  10. Is this caused by global warming? Or is this one of those times where weather should not be confused with climate?

  11. gator69 says:

Yes, but the Great Lakes are only .05% of the Earth’s surface. At least 97% of the planet has a fever, and 98% of grantologists predict that this year 99% of the Great Lakes will 100% ice free!

    Panic, enslave, and raise taxes.

  12. Andy says:

    3009% percent of normal !!

I’m surprised this is not posted in in peer reviewed scientific journals !

What is going on with the world?

    Andy
