The truth about polar bears

In Davis Strait, between Greenland and Baffin Island, the polar bear population has grown from 900 animals in the late 1970s to around 2,100 today. In Foxe Basin — a portion of northern Hudson Bay — a population that was estimated to be 2,300 in the early 2000s now stands at 2,570. And in specific areas of western Hudson Bay, the most-studied, most-photographed group of bears on Earth seems to have been on a slow but steady increase since in the 1970s.

O/T but you will love this one from Pat @ Jo Nova’s

10 Nov: Quadrant: Tony Thomas: Who’s Killing Our Climate Scientists?

Well nobody, actually, unless you count a smattering of sometimes rude emails as representing credible threats to warmists’ lives and safety. As with climate change itself, our purportedly un-settled scientists refuse to share their evidence of bloodthirsty sceptics on the warpath
Why is the Australian Academy of Science going off the deep end claiming “reprehensible vilification” of warmist scientists? It’s now saying they’re being so threatened and harassed that their ability to do science is in jeopardy. Academy President Andrew Holmes, addressing a greenhouse conference in Hobart on October 27, claimed
“The costs to individuals can be high. It is therefore critical that as scientists and experts we stand together. The ability of scientists to conduct their work, free of fear or hindrance, is vital to the future wellbeing of our community, and the Academy will continue to advocate for academic freedom”…
“As the International Council for Science proclaims, the free and responsible practice of science is fundamental to scientific advancement and human and environmental well-being.”

I thought at first he was chastising the academics at University of Western Australia over their successful witchhunt against non-sceptic Bjorn Lomborg, or that he was chastising academics at University of Melbourne for wanting punitive fines to drive sceptics out of the media. Or maybe rebuking US academic peers who wanted sceptic corporations to be prosecuted under the Racketeering and Corrupting Influences Act (that exercise backfired spectacularly). But I erred, Holmes’ victimology includes only orthodox climate scientists as its purported casualties…

So they are back to their old tricks of PROJECTION again.

These people are worse than any witch killer in the 17th century. At least the witch killer’s actually believed in witchcraft – these guys don’t – they are just evil.

Western Hudson Bay polar bear numbers are stable, no trend in ice breakup or freeze-up

    Posted on October 13, 2015

This needs saying again: the latest study on Western Hudson Bay polar bears reveal the population has been stable since 2004 and there has been no significant trend in either breakup or freeze-up dates since 2001….

  4. Crashex says:

This is a good example of the feedback mechanisms working to push the trend in a particular direction. We have all heard the AGW acolytes harp on about less ice means more solar heating which increase temperature and melt more ice. When the weather shifts a bit, those feedbacks work the other direction as well; something the AGW crowd never thinks about because they only think the train can move in one direction. Here the above average ice at the solstice has reflected more of the insolation and reduced the evaporation rate. That moves the feedback toward lower water temperatures and fresher (less saline) water which promotes ice longevity and regrowth. The feedbacks will trend toward increased ice growth until a long term weather event disrupts the trend.

The Hudson is poised to freeze earlier this year, which will cause colder regional temperatures, which will encourage thicker ice growth and slower melt next spring.

The next couple of days are projected to have some wind from the south that will compact the existing ice, reducing the extent and area temporarily. But in a cooling, low insolation environment like November, that simply allows for more cooling and the ice formation will charge ahead when the winds shift on the 17th or 18th.
