The Republican Elites (or the Rethugians) have always been horrible swine. They are never the friend of the Republican rank and file. They hate the “man in the street” or the “silent majority”. The Republican Establishment would much rather see a Hillary Clinton presidency than a Trump presidency.
Why?
I think that the reason is that in a fascist economy like the USA (using the word as an economic descriptor and not a pejorative), the masters need to know that the president will keep us on a “war footing” to keep our “war economy” going. It has been a “war economy” since the early 40s for these crazies.
Oh well, when the cost of the Empire brings it all crashing down, we will have scant pleasure is saying “I told you so”.
Rush Limbaugh is warning that even if Trump stumbles don’t count on Cruz getting the nomination. He believes there is a very good chance that neither will get the delegates to lock up the nomination and neither will be Republican nominee.
History shows that Rush is right. Since 1856, candidates who got a “Plurality” rather than a “Majority” were never the GOP nominees. As Priebus points out Seward got the plurality in 1860 but Lincoln was the nominee.
This time it could be different given the “8 state” rule created in 2008 to ensure that Romney would be nominated. Only Trump and Cruz can win eight states so unless this rule is struck down they are the only possible nominees.
I don’t have a dog in the fight but all indicators are Trump will win in November in a landslide. IMHO
And what indicators are those?
I remember the “he’s just a Hollywood actor” routine, and a certain redhead girlfriend of mine who was worried that if Reagan were elected, the Soviets would simply run roughshod right over us.
I’ve heard the “he’s just an actor” proclamations on a regular basis in 1980s Boulder, unfortunately much of the time from speakers lacking the presumed qualities of your redhead girlfriend.
There’s nothing new under the sun, much less under the rock where politics occurs.
Trump is not Reagan, but has one thing very much in common with Reagan and that is the ability to connect with ordinary people. Also to gives the same kind of tough Reaganesque rhetoric that he will not be jerked around by our adversaries. Some fear on the part of our enemies is something we definitely need at this time.
True, though there is never good time for our enemies to lose their fear of us.
Did Reagan make fun of other candidates wives?
No he didn’t, but he did make fun of a lot of other people. It was a more polite time then. Think of it as rudeness inflation. Adjusted for it, there is no dtfference between Reagan and Trump.
Great find. We’ve been here before. And back then the Bush family tried to stop Reagan until HW was given VP as a consolation prize.
If Donald Trump could and would take control of US policy back from the UN and the National Academies of Sciences, he would have my vote.
A week before Reagan was elected in a landslide (48 states?) polls were showing Carter ahead by 5 points. Today polls say that Hillary beats Trump by 5 points. How worthless is that?
All the Republican establishment has to do is respect the will of the voters in their primary. Sadly they won’t do that and will continue to piss in the soup.
My dream is that either Trump or Cruz will be nominated by the GOP and then restructure the Republican party so that the voters decide who the nominee will be rather than the party elite that gives us candidates like Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Even worse was George Bush (2000) even though he won at least one election. Why was he worse than the RINOs mentioned above? In the 2000 election people like me were working enthusiastically at the “grass roots” level manning telephone banks, planting signs etc, thinking that young George was the second coming of Ronald Reagan.
Four years later many of us had resigned from the Republican party in disgust. Thanks to George Bush I am unaffiliated and voted for a “Write In” candidate (Boris Johnson) in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
The clueless Republican elite snatches defeat from the jaws of victory time after time by fielding candidates who offer nothing the “Base” cares about. Consequently voter turnout in the USA is in the 40% range which is lower than most “First World” countries.
If Trump is the nominee the voter turnout will jump because people like me will show up to vote for him. His victory will be a landslide of Reagan proportions. If Trump buries the hatchet and invites Cruz to be his VP it won’t matter who the Democrat candidate is.
Reagan was the last looter candidate I voted for, and the best endorsement Trump could have is the fear and loathing of the GOP soft machine. Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams has some interesting takes on Trump over below the cartoons–nonpartisan takes that probably do not please the entrenched.
