“football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”
? George Orwell, 1984

Panem et circenses in other words.
It was ever thus.
Yes it was. Remember the movie ‘Gladiator’? How Commodus kept the mob entertained with the games to divert their attention from his failing administration? Quite accurate I think.
Very accurate.
Welfare and drugs and big screen TV.
As for me, I’ll pass on all three. In fact, I’ll even pass on the football and gambling.
How odd… I don’t FEEL bored! Just the opposite.
I was always a sex-and-drugs-and-rock-and-roll man myself!
Yes, I was always more interested in special than general welfare …
Einstein and the Preamble? Not bad, Colorado.
BAH-DUM-CHHHH! (rimshot)
We already are slaves. They are just looking for ways to make the cage smaller and smaller, with your approval.
More than a year of bombing by the best airforce in the world with 24/7 satellite observation and they couldn’t wipe out those Toyota pick-ups.
With your approval and help.
We haven’t gotten rid of ISIS for exactly the same reason that jugglers don’t run out of balls when they are juggling. One hand keeps pitching the balls up and away — but the left hand is catching them and feeding them back to the right hand again. If we wanted to get rid of ISIS we would stop funding and supplying them. As near as I can tell, Russia is the only country (outside of the old Syrian government) that is doing a serious job of stopping ISIS.
Actually Jason, as someone who juggles, both hands perform the same task. The right hand feeds the left, and the left hand feeds the right.

And not…

The first is the more basic way, but there are other ways, like the Shower. http://www.libraryofjuggling.com/Tricks/3balltricks/Shower.html
By the way… years ago I taught myself juggling starting with the regular pattern you show. I took three rolled up apirs of socks and sat on a stool, vowing not to stand up until I could juggle. I had a long sit…but finally got it!
I learned while part of a madrigal choir, from a friend who was a master. We teamed up with a third and used to have a pretty good act. On top of that all three of us sang together for years, and each of us played at least one instrument. So when we needed attention from the ladies, we got it in spades!
Gator, it sounds like your method of luring ladies was much better than mine. I was so sure that dancing with a lampshade on my head was universally appealing…
Jason,
I figured out how to get the ‘attention of the guys’.
I went rock climbing, caving, back packing and took chemistry (and geology courses) at a university with 10 guys for every girl….
Just replace “beer” with “cannabis” and you’ve got a perfect match. Of course Orwell was referencing the bread and circuses Cat properly quotes above. Maximus said in Gladiator (also reference above) “are you not entertained?” But we do have some clever minds working today, look no further than The Hunger Games for a modern vision of this kind of iron fist in a velvet glove.
One more reason why I do not watch sports, it is an utter waste of resources.
I can see a route toward at least one sport becoming productive. Manny Pacquiao is both a boxer, and a congressman. That gave me the idea. Why don’t American politicians box? Can’t get a budget through the house? Paul Ryan and Nancy Pelosi settle it in the ring. Veto threat? Let Obama and Tom Cotton fight it out. They could sell tickets. How much would you pay to see Dianne Feinstein fight John McCain? They could pay off the national debt. And with a little luck, that fight alone could permanently fix two problems we’ve had in the senate for decades.
Since Searchlight had no high school, Reid boarded with relatives 40 miles away in Henderson, Nevada to attend Basic High School,[4] where he played football, and was an amateur boxer.[7] While at Basic High, he met future Nevada governor Mike O’Callaghan, who was a teacher there and served as Reid’s boxing coach.

Speaking of a waste of resources.
I’d rather see Pelosi and Ryan on one side of the cage and this guy on the other:

Hollande was at the games when the attack started.
Can’t even have fantasy football.
