Between 1981 and 1987, Hansen was already quite busy cooling his own past. Blue is Hansen 1981. Black is Hansen 1987. Graphs are normalized to the most recent common five year mean in 1978.
Another way of looking at this is to normalize to 1885 five year means. 1981 in blue.

Events over my research mentor’s career and my own suggest sixty-eight years (2014 – 1946 = 68 yrs) of deceit by NAS and RS to hide the source of energy in cores of:
1. Heavy atoms like uranium
2. Some planets like Jupiter
3. Ordinary stars like the Sun
4. Galaxies like the Milky Way.
NAS and RS are welcome to correct this interpretation of their actions by publicly addressing nine pages of precise experimental data that disagre with standard (consensus) models of heavy nuclei, stars, etc:

NAS and RS are now as dangerous as cornered animals.
Diplomatic skill is desperately needed to minimize the damage, as society is restored to sanity (contact with reality) and integrity is restored to institutions that NAS and RS supervised.

What is the effect and significance of the scale change? What is the purpose?
There were a series of plots on the same graph which used different temperature scales.
