The world’s greatest climatologist is James Hansen, who says that parts of Manhattan will be underwater by 2008.
While doing research 12 or 13 years ago, I met Jim Hansen, the scientist who in 1988 predicted the greenhouse effect before Congress. I went over to the window with him and looked out on Broadway in New York City and said, “If what you’re saying about the greenhouse effect is true, is anything going to look different down there in 20 years?” He looked for a while and was quiet and didn’t say anything for a couple seconds. Then he said, “Well, there will be more traffic.” I, of course, didn’t think he heard the question right. Then he explained, “The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change.” Then he said, “There will be more police cars.” Why? “Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up.”
I was in Manhattan last weekend, and it didn’t appear to be underwater. There were a lot of police in Times Square, but they were busy fighting with Spiderman.
And so far, over the last 10 years, we’ve had 10 of the hottest years on record.
Didn’t he also say that restaurants would have signs in their windows that read, “Water by request only.”
Under the greenhouse effect, extreme weather increases. Depending on where you are in terms of the hydrological cycle, you get more of whatever you’re prone to get. New York can get droughts, the droughts can get more severe and you’ll have signs in restaurants saying “Water by request only.”
We had a lovely dinner in Manhattan, and were able to obtain water – both with and without ice.
When did he say this will happen?
Within 20 or 30 years. And remember we had this conversation in 1988 or 1989.
Does he still believe these things?
Yes, he still believes everything. I talked to him a few months ago and he said he wouldn’t change anything that he said then.
The great thing about progressives is that they can never learn anything, and that reality has no influence on their belief system.
But he DID ‘change a thing.’ The journalist *very specifically* asked him what things out the window would look like in 20 years.
20 years came and went, NOTHING CHANGED. When this was widely noted and reported, hansen called up the journalist and ripped him a new one. Suddenly it wasn’t 20 years. Ohhhh No, the journalist got it wrong. He meant to write that hansen said ’30 or 40 years.’ ‘Yeahhhhhh, that’s the ticket. That’s what he said. I got it wrong.’
In 12 years, when it’s abundantly obvious to even the mentally challenged that he was utterly wrong (even after “adjustments”), they’ll just claim he meant 100 years. You can’t win an argument of reason with liars.
Progressive ambition is made of sterner stuff. Inert, hermetically sealed and impervious to disruption by observation.
The 2001 report from Susie doesn’t quite get Reiss’ recollection correct.
Of course the West Side Highway is dry as ever. Of the 10 feet sea-level rise needed to inundate it, we have gotten exactly 1 inch in the past 25 years. For an accurate look at what Hansen predicted and later adjusted in 2007, see the first 13 minutes of the ex-NASA videoclip presented at ICCC-9: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/49724714
Stay tuned – for Jim to be right, 9 feet 11 inches must appear within the next 15 years!
Manhattan under water: Both Dr Hansen and I are dissappointed.
You will never make the right first impression with a warmest unless you tell him or her to shut the %#&@ up, and vacate your office or living room. Only when met with extreme personal disapproval will a warmest look at the facts that made them un-welcomed in polite company. At the very least they will become hesitant to spread their lies and half truths.
Have you no respect for authority?
“Didn’t he also say that restaurants would have signs in their windows that read, “Water by request only.”
I believe that is a misquote. What he said was that restaurants would have signs in their windows that read, “Carbonated drinks over 16 ounces by request only. And maybe not even then.”
It has become a religion with the warmists. It is cult-like now. Quite scary actually. And they call skeptics “deniers”???
Not progressive, just delusional!!!
Okay. This is the last response i will post on this site. i need to play with y grandchildren. I don’t have the time or energy to respond to your always false statements. You obviously have no interest in a “REAL” science discussion. Let me in closing put a little emphasis on your writings. All are FALSE – totally and completely without foundation! Please remove me from tour emailing list.

Gene… What gives? Hansen like so many other hysterics … Make predictions which ove to be false… Prove to be way off….
Isn’t Science supposed to be about being held to account for your theorems and predictions??
Cooling the past while warming the present sounds like a pack of lies and BS… NOT Science…
This is very disappointing. There are so many other senior scientists who play with their grandchildren, and in the remaining time fight against false science and take a stand for true science. Doing it for the children.
I mean, how much time and energy does it take to come to this site once in a while and write that all Steven Goddard’s writings are totally FALSE and completely without foundation? Doing it for the children?
Such well reasoned rebuttal, how could I not be converted to the true path?
You may not have the energy, but you also do not have the facts to make such a ridiculous accusation. If you think your dropping in to make statements like this one out of the blue is going to damage Steve’s reputation you are delusional. Rather, your words say a boatload of negative things about your character. Or the lack thereof.
Steven… You were underwater but didn’t even know it… Plus it was really, really hot.
This post makes me so nostalgic for the days when Tony Duncan would come over and fight his own personal pyrrhic battle, of ex post facto trying to change what Hansen said. It was so delightful to watch him twist and turn, bend, fold and mutilate what was said. Oh Tony, what ever happened to you???
As someone explained: “progressives …/…can never learn anything, and that reality has no influence on their belief system”. How come, at least reasonably intelligent people like Mann (able anyway to obtain scientific diploma I think) became so blind, so anti-scientific, able to trick data for “Th Cause”? In my opinion it cannot be an individual drift even for cash motivation, because to support a cause (known wrong from beginning) for moeny is fruitful for some years, than shame come and last for ever.
The only rationale explanation is existence of a planetary Plot fueled by some billionaires planning to crop much more public money from stupid science illiterate politicians which ultimate goal cannot be smaller than leading population to accept to pay huge add-on taxes for the sake of an ill-emotionally propaganda target, “save the planet”.
It is no more than a commercial ad.
The more they pay, the less they will educate and this goal is parallel to western world education level plunging direction. With 60years of adult life, I am astonished by the terrible reduction of basic technical and scientific knowledge. An ocean of illiteracy, mediatization of stupid liers, out of which emerge few islands of knowledgeable persons – true scientists – who are not listened at.
As everything seem to become mediatical, scaremonger, full of (restrained list of) pious matters, this “politically correct” invasion is indeed a totalitarian attempt.
It follows the same dangerous path as nazi 80 years ago: Police of Thinking, reducing Man to a robot, even not an animal.
