Washington Post Record Arctic Fraud Continues Unabated

The Washington Post is misleading their frozen US readers once again about the Arctic, telling them the Arctic has temperatures 50 degrees above normal and record low sea ice. They say this is not normal.

Pre-Christmas melt? North Pole forecast to warm 50 degrees above normal Thursday – The Washington Post

Temperatures in Greenland are incredibly cold. The reason the North Pole is not as cold as normal is because deep waves in the jet stream have brought the cold air south, and milder air north.

Arctic sea ice extent is higher than 2012 and 2013, and about the same as last year. There is no “record low sea ice” as the Washington Post fraudsters claim.

What is going on in the Arctic with meridional circulation was explained by Science News during the 1970s ice age scare. There is nothing unusual going on in the Arctic.

The December 1977 issue of National Geographic showed exactly what was going on.

National Geographic : 1977 Dec

Deep dips in the jet stream brought warm air towards the pole, and cold air to the Midwest and East.

Florida was frozen during January, 1977. California was warm and had record drought.

Alaska was 50 degrees in January 1977, and the bears refused to hibernate. Note the same 50 degree number used in the Washington Post article.

27 Jan 1977, Page 8 – The Sheboygan Press

This is just one more fake news attempt by the Washington Post to derail President Trump’s efforts to end junk climate science. Warm air in one place normally means cold air somewhere else. This is perfectly normal weather and has nothing to do with fake news global warming.

So far, everyone who has jumped in front of the Trump Train has been crushed.

But even in other years, the arctic has not been this warm.

It is expected to be above freezing in the dark of the arctic winter night at the pole tomorrow.

and the ice extent as measured by the DMI is ‘only’ as low as 2012 – well that’s ‘only’ as low as its ever been in the 37 year satellite record.

but bear in mind the DMI figure is the most optimistic assessment out there – this is more likely the reality:
    https://seaice.uni-bremen.de/data/amsr2/today/extent_n_running_mean_amsr2_previous.png

a record low and not growing appreciably…

There is still no ice around Svalbard and the Bering Straits are not icebound – Hudson Bay has only just (mostly) frozen over:
    https://seaice.uni-bremen.de/data/amsr2/today/Arctic_AMSR2_visual.png

    That’s not ‘normal’

The ice itself is thin and broken up and the volume is also at a record low.

No, this is not normal and it is very likely, alas, that next year will be even less ‘normal’ than before.

      • Vendicar Decarian says:

The chart says it all. Last Year’s maximum sea ice VOLUME was 2,500 cubic kilometers lower than the 2 sigma norm, and lower than the 2012 volume which was the previous low.

Similarly the summer minimum volume was lower than the minimum of 2012 and remains on track with 2012.

Sea ice Extent is even lower and the growth of sea ice area has stalled.

        • AndyG55 says:

And WAY above the Holocene average.

You do know that there was often ZERO summer sea ice through most of the first 3/4 of the Holocene.

On the other hand we have the science…

Arctic temperatures soar to 30 C above normal

The Arctic continues to run a fever.

On Thursday, the temperature there was almost 30 C warmer than average, and it continued into Friday morning. Ocean buoys recorded temperatures near the North Pole of 0 C or warmer. That’s right: It’s warmer in the Arctic than it is in Thunder Bay, Ont.

This isn’t an isolated event. Arctic temperatures have been unusually warm for the past few months, though perhaps not quite as dramatically different as we’re seeing now.

In November, the region was 20 C warmer than average.

“The temperatures there of the atmosphere are on … any given day, like 20 C warmer than they should be for this time of year,” Jennifer Francis, a marine and coastal sciences research professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, told CBC News at the time.

“The ocean temperatures there are also warmer than they should be. I’m really, really worried, and I think everyone should be.”

Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, told CBC News the warming is a sign that climate change is happening and is part of a changing world.

And as it warms, older ice melts, leaving thin ice in its wake. This allows the ice to melt faster.

Oh, Good Grief. How about reading some actual science.

First the shortest climate cycle is 60-90 years so the ice would have to be compared to an average of AT LEAST 60 years (ocean cycles)

Second Statistical process control uses SIX SIGMA not four. (And yeah I am a cert. QC eng. as well as a chemist)

Third the AMO is positive and the PDO is positive and we just ended an El Nino so of course the ice is less than the “normal” given the average is for the thirty year warm 1/2 of the sine curve.

            **********
For the next part the forcing for CO2 from 0 ppmv to 400 ppmv is 32-44 W m–2 with mankind’s contribution being 1.5 W/m 2 for the forcing of anthropogenic CO2 [cf., Reid, 1997] And the effect is small after the first 200 ppmv because it is log, not linear. Keep those numbers in mind.
            **********

We are at the end of the Holocene at around the 11,720 year mark. That’s two centuries or so beyond half the present precession cycle (or 23,000/2=11,500). Therefore the Little Ice Age was about the time the next glaciation was expected to start but the sun went into a GRAND Solar Minimum, the strongest in 3,000 years. SEE: A History of Solar Activity over Millennia

At this time in the Milancovitch Cycle ‘Global Warming’ is impossible. There is just not enough Solar energy at 65N. (Glaciation starts in the Hudson Bay)

Both NASA and WIki use Berger’s MODELS to say the Holocene will continue and the Ice Age the earth is presently in has ended. However more recent research using real data shoots Berger’s models dead.
A Pliocene-Pleistocene stack of 57 globally distributed benthic D18O records
            Lisiecki & Raymo

            ABSTRACT
We present a 5.3-Myr stack (the ‘‘LR04’’ stack) of benthic d18O records from 57 globally distributed sites aligned by an automated graphic correlation algorithm…
            RESULTS
Recent research has focused on MIS 11 as a possible analog for the present interglacial [e.g., Loutre and Berger, 2003; EPICA Community Members, 2004] because both occur during times of low eccentricity. The LR04 age model establishes that MIS 11 spans two precession cycles, with d18O values below 3.6% for 20 kyr, from 398 – 418 ka. In comparison, stages 9 and 5 remained below 3.6% for 13 and 12 kyr, respectively, and the Holocene interglacial has lasted 11 kyr so far. In the LR04 age model, the average LSR of 29 sites is the same from 398– 418 ka as from 250–650 ka; consequently, stage 11 is unlikely to be artificially stretched. However, the 21 June insolation minimum at 65°N during MIS 11 is only 489 W/m2, much less pronounced than the present minimum of 474 W/m2. In addition, current insolation values are not predicted to return to the high values of late MIS 11 for another 65 kyr. We propose that this effectively precludes a ‘‘double precession cycle’’ interglacial [e.g., Raymo, 1997] in the Holocene

A newer paper from the fall of 2012 Can we predict the duration of an interglacial? agrees and gives the calculated solar insolation values @ 65N on June 22 for several glacial inceptions:

Current value – insolation = 479W m−2 (from that paper)

            MIS 7e – insolation = 463 W m−2,
            MIS 11c – insolation = 466 W m−2,
            MIS 13a – insolation = 500 W m−2,
            MIS 15a – insolation = 480 W m−2,
            MIS 17 – insolation = 477 W m−2
            ……………

You can also use Berger calculated June insolation @ 60N (not 65N) from NOAA
            (www1DOT)ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/climate_forcing/orbital_variations/berger_insolation/insol91.jun

The switch from the Wisconsin Ice Age to the Holocene occurred in three years ~11,720 years ago.
The solar insolation for transition would be ~ 523 Wm-2.
            11,000 years ago…………… 523.16 Wm-2 (peak insolation)
            12,000 years ago…………… 522.50 Wm-2
            ….

            Holocene peak insolation: 523 Wm-2
NOW (modern Warm Period) 476 Wm-2
This means Solar insolation has decreased 47 Wm-2

The Depth of the last ice age ~ around 464 Wm−2
The earth is now ONLY 12 Wm-2 above the deepest part of the Ice Age! That means once the climate flips to cold we will not warm out of it.

What could flip the switch on the bistable climate?

Just in case you actually think the present warm blip is ‘Unprecedented!’ You are incorrect.

Take a look at the Late Eemian Aridity Pulse (LEAP) the last waming just before the Eemain dropped off the cliff into the Wisconsin Ice Age. It makes the current mild warming look like a piker.

As the Authors, Neuman and Hearty, of the last paper said:
“Rapid changes in sea level and associated destabilization of climate at the turbulent close of the last interglacial maximum appear to be recorded directly in the geomorphology, stratigraphy, and sedimentary structures of carbonate platform islands in the Bahamas. Considered together, the observations presented here suggest a rapid rise, short crest, and rapid fall of sea level at the close of 5e.
The lesson from the last interglacial “greenhouse” in the Bahamas is that the closing of that interval brought sea-level changes that were rapid and extreme. This has prompted the remark that between the greenhouse and the icehouse lies a climatic “madhouse”!

            ……..

High rates of sea-level rise during the last interglacial period

[….] Table S1. Summary of literature-based estimates concerning the timing of the MIS-5e
maximum highstand interval and the possible presence of interruptions of that maximum highstand. The overall apparent age range of the maximum highstand is around 128 until 119 kyr BP [….]

The work shows a clear distinction of two main highstands (their phases 5.51 and 5.53) separated by a brief sea-level drop (5.52), within MIS-5e.

Table S1. shows high stands from various papers:
RED SEA (The area of the research paper above)
Egyptian coast, NW Red Sea — 125-120ka
            South Sinai, N Red Sea — 125-118ka
Eritrean coast, SW Red Sea — 125 ± 7ka one ~125 and one younger event

BAHAMAS (The area of the research paper below)
            Bahamas — 129-120 ka
            Bahamas — 132-118ka and 130=117 ka one ~125 and one ~121

Rapid sea-level changes at the close of the last interglacial (substage 5e) recorded in Bahamian island geology

            Abstract

Rapid and abrupt relative sea-level changes within the last interglacial (substage 5e) are recorded in the island geology of the tectonically stable Bahamas. From 132 to 118 ka, reef growth reached a maximum elevation near +2 m, as indicated by fossil reef elevation across the platform, whereas bioeroded notches are incised in coastal cliffs as high as +6 m. The end of the interval is characterized by voluminous eolianites exhibiting palm tree and frond impressions. It is inferred that sea level for most of the interval remained near +2 m, restraining reef growth, and that the notch at +6 m represents a rapid and brief excursion just before the close of the substage. The subsequent fall must have been rapid in order to leave the notch profile intact and mobilize windward lagoon ooids into dunes before cementation could anchor them. In order to explain the rapid rise to +6 m, glacial surging is invoked. The subsequent fall, also rapid, may be a consequence of the surge flooding high latitudes and providing enough moisture to initiate reglaciation and drawdown.

If this continues, next year will end up as having a HUGE DROP in global temperatures.

      • Vendicar Decarian says:

“If this continues, next year will end up as having a HUGE DROP” – Andy

Hahahahahahahah…. LaNina is lowering global temperatures and next year will not be as warm as 2016. However a tipping point was reached in 2015/2016 and global temperatures are now locked at a higher level then they were in previous years.

        • AndyG55 says:

Vendickhead strikes with his idiocy yet again.

          Using GISS….. roflmao !!

REAL temps show no warming at all from 2001 until the beginning of the recent El Nino.

The El Nino was a release of energy from the ocean.

The sun will not replace that energy as quickly as it did during the Grand Solar Maximum.

          Cooling is on the way.

        • AndyG55 says:

“However a tipping point was reached in 2015/2016”

ROFLMAO.. I think you mean a “tippling point”

You should never mix alcohol with hallucinogenics, VD.

        • AndyG55 says:

What Ven Dick is actually saying is that the El Nino has caused a step change , like the 19989 El Nino did.

Now El Ninos are a non-CO2 event, purely NATURAL driven by the sun and wind systems.

As I have pointed out many times, these El Nino step changes a have been the ONLY warming in the whole of the satellite data era..

So what Ven Dick is essentially saying is that there is absolutely no CO2 warming signal in the REAL temperature data. despite a large rise in aCO2 and that the warming is TOTALLY NATURAL driven by solar influences.

Thanks Ven Dick.. but we already knew that.

      • Latitude says:

Andy, it’s a lot worse on the other side…

    • Aurora Svant says:

Since last year, when DMI chose to hide the ice extent growth behind the highly suspect “operational product” (probably the most blatantly biased “adjustment” after Gavin’s yearly memory-hole op on temperature records), whatever “unusually worst than we thought” ice extent estimate or north-pole temperature measurement has become the joke of the moment.

      • RAH says:

It seems though that once the DMI converts that red operational product line to the black historic line it reflects reality better.

    • R2Dtoo says:

So Griff Is “almost unprecedented” like “very” unique?

    • Joey Caligula says:

1934 was the warmest year for the Arctic on record until the NOAA folks started tampering pardon me “adjusting” the temperature record.

    • Joel Snider says:

Griff is a regular Troll over at WATTS. Basically, he just posts press releases from alarmist sites. He’s fairly simple minded and childish. He’s beginning to be ignored, so it’s not surprising he’s trying to be a pain in the ass here, too.

    • Jarjobro says:

What “other years” has the arctic not been “this warm” ? Data/citation?
For your claim of “that’s not normal”- relative to what? Last year? 3 years ago? 10? 50? It’s folly to conflate weather with climate. I also get a laugh when individuals claim a de facto increase in warming when a) the amount is within the error of measurement and/or b) ‘scientists’ have to retroactively change the data to fit this conclusion ( talk about a fudge factor).

    • FourTimesAYear says:

      Let’s see…-55F + 50F = -5. Nope. Not melting. And it’s winter. The ice isn’t “thin and broken up”.
      It refreezes every winter.

  2. DeplorableBritInMontreal says:

Article in the Grauniad yesterday was lamenting that Churchill was unseasonably warm in November, and our dear polar bears are in danger. Yesterday it was at -27C. parts of the NWT and Nunavut have been at -40 or so for more than a week. Our bit of the Arctic isn’t going to melt any time soon,

  3. Steve Keohane says:

It is expected to be above freezing in the dark of the arctic winter night at the pole tomorrow. Anything to back up this fantasy?

    • LaikaTheSpaceDog says:

I think they got stuff up there measuring the temperature or something

      • tonyheller says:

        Moron alert

        • LaikaTheSpaceDog says:

Well either they are measuring the temperature up in the arctic using some kind of whiz bang devices or they just make the temperatures up. What is your view on this topic Tony?

      • AndyG55 says:

Yes, and those measurements show its well below freezing.

Do try to keep up instead of making mindless dribble.

        • LaikaTheSpaceDog says:

No need to be rude Andy. I’m just a simple person trying to gain a better understanding of the situation.

I accept your assertion that the measurements are showing its well below freezing. Bit I’m having trouble understanding is when I look at all those science sites like NASA and stuff, they say the temperatures are like way above normal. ….20C and stuff.

          So are they lying Andy?

          • gator69 says:

For starters, any real scientist would say that temperatures are above “average”, and not above “normal”. There is no “normal” in climate or weather. So those making this claim are either ignorant or pushing an agenda (or both), and we should pay little attention to them.

          • AndyG55 says:

OMG they are making them DUMB nowadays…
the spaced-out dog doesn’t realise that “average” is some 30 degrees below freezing, so 20 above “average” is still 10 below freezing.

            Failed junior high maths, apparently.

And its a WEATHER event, the REAL cold is currently over Northern Russia and Alaska, which are some 30 degrees BELOW “normal”

          • AndyG55 says:

Note.. I am using degrees Celsius.

The 50 degrees mentioned elsewhere is in Fahrenheit.

  4. Mark says:

I’m surprised the WP did not have a picture of ice chunks floating in the sea with the sun high in the sky even though the pole is in almost complete darkness this time of year

  5. Billyjack says:

What I found about the Post article was that they failed to give the units of the temperature differential. Did I miss something in that the projected 50 degrees was Kelvin and that they failed to convert to any units that their ignorant readers could comprehend?

    • Sunsettommy says:

It is still below freezing. They use the 50 number to make it look big,but that is misleading. The only time it get barely above freezing is in July/August.

What Griff and other shallow warmists thinkers fail to realize is that all that warm air is leaving the planet FASTER this way, than if it stayed in Canada and America.

It is an accelerated COOLING event.

      • Gail Combs says:

A side from the fact that it is darn cold at the poles, the atmosphere impeding heat lost is the thinnest at the poles.

…The troposphere extends from the Earth’s surface upward to between about 6 and 20 kilometers (4 and 12 miles). The exact extent depends on location. The troposphere is shallowest — or narrowest — at the poles, and deepest — or thickest — at the equator. At the geographic North and South Poles, the troposphere reaches only 6 kilometers (4 miles) high, while at the equator, it extends nearly 20 kilometers (12 miles) high….
        http://education.seattlepi.com/over-part-earth-atmosphere-deepest-thickest-6169.html

It gets worse. The tropopause over the poles is the closest to the ground in winter.

  6. CheshireRed says:

Between his win and inauguration the Green Blob is rolling out climate scare after scare. Bogus ‘reports’, ‘studies’ and ‘extreme weather events’ are offered up daily, all to desperately maintain their cause as still being relevant. It’s not. If Trump is true to his word they’re the ones facing meltdown, not the Arctic.

    • Gail Combs says:

Just in time too since we are at the beginning of some really cold weather.

BIG NEWS VIII: New solar theory predicts imminent global cooling

I have already seen this with my white clover not dying back in the summer for the last four years. I have also seen my water tanks with 2 inches of ice in the winter while Jeff Masters wunderground showed temps above freezing for the station down the street.

      • LaikaTheSpaceDog says:

It was really really cold at my place last night so that pretty much buries this climate warming thing. Amazing those scientist clowns miss that sort of stuff and us ordinary people can see it..

        • tonyheller says:

          Moron alert

          • LaikaTheSpaceDog says:

          • AndyG55 says:

There was nothing to tear apart, just an empty moronic post.

you know.. where people actually live.

          • Gail Combs says:

Andy, they miss all the cold and the snow records all over the world because they ONLY read the Ministry of Truth.

Since LaikaTheSpaceDog doesn’t like my comment about the ‘cool weather’ in NC how about else where since Solar Cycle 24 made ‘Gorebull Warming’ hit the skids?

Thanks Gail. Thats a very impressive list. Thanks for the effort. It shows that it gets cold in all sorts of places on the planet and it snows a lot too. I’ll take that into consideration.

What really interests me though is whether or not the planet is hotter or colder now than it was 100 years ago, 1000 years ago etc.

To find that out get the RAW data from NOAA if you can find it and make comparisons station by station or for nearby stations. The “homogenized” products that NOAA, BOM, etc publish for the consumption of the public are corrupted and reflect only their own alternate reality which they wish to convey to back the political agenda. You know they have to keep those that put and keep them in their positions and pay them happy.

The End Holocene? — Earth Changes
            …..

Whether the Holocene interglacial ends in another glaciation or whether it bumps along in the Wild Weather Zone between the warm interglacial and cold glaciation states is the real question that is ignored. Right now the earth is bi-stable with the cold state more stable than the warm state. Major volcanic action or a ‘nuclear winter’ may be enough to kick the earth into the start of glaciation esp. since we are looking at a prolonged period of reduced solar activity. At this point know one knows.
            ….

            Two important recent papers:

Lisiecki and Raymo (Paleooceanography, 2005) produced an exhaustive analysis of 57 globally distributed deep ocean cores reaching back about 5 million years. This paper essentially quashed the Berger and Loutre’s 2002 modeling paper that NOAA continues to cite and no one has come forward with anything supporting an extended Holocene since then.

…the June 21 insolation minimum at 65N during MIS 11 is only 489 W/m2, much less pronounced than the present minimum of 474 W/m2. In addition, current insolation values are not predicted to return to the high values of late MIS 11 for another 65 kyr. We propose that this effectively precludes a ‘double precession-cycle’ interglacial [e.g., Raymo, 1997] in the Holocene without human influence….
            http://large.stanford.edu/publications/coal/references/docs/Lisiecki_Raymo_2005_Pal.pdf

The second papers is a fall 2012 paper “Can we predict the duration of an interglacial?”

…although it has been unclear whether the subdued current summer insolation minimum (479 W m−2 ), the lowest of the last 800 kyr, would be sufficient to lead to glaciation (e.g. Crucifix, 2011). Comparison with MIS 19c, a close astronomical analogue characterized by an equally weak summer insolation minimum (474 W m−2 ) and a smaller overall decrease from maximum summer solstice insolation values, suggests that glacial inception is possible despite the subdued insolation forcing, if CO2 concentrations were 240 ± 5 ppmv (Tzedakis et al., 2012). …..
            (wwwDOT)clim-past.net/8/1473/2012/cp-8-1473-2012.pdf

This paper, also gives the 21 June solar insolation @ 65◦ N for termination of several interglacials.
            Current Solar insolation = 479 W m−2

            MIS 7e – insolation = 463 W m−2,
            MIS 11c – insolation = 466 W m−2,
            MIS 13a – insolation = 500 W m−2,
            MIS 15a – insolation = 480 W m−2,
            MIS 17 – insolation = 477 W m−2

You can also look at the calculations from NOAA/Berger that I mentioned above. These are at June solar insolation @ 60◦ N and not 65◦ N so they will not agree with the above paper.
            http://www1.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/climate_forcing/orbital_variations/berger_insolation/insol91.jun

Low point of the last ice age – around 463 Wm−2
NOW (modern Warm Period) — 476Wm-2 (13 Wm-2 higher than low point)
            Holocene peak insolation — 522.5 Wm-2 (46.5 Wm-2 higher than present)

            Wisconsin Ice age- Holocene transition
            12,000 years ago…………… 522.50 Wm-2

As you can see if the earth starts into glaciation it is not reversible until the the 21 June solar insolation @ 65◦ N again reaches a high point over somewhere over 520 Wm-2 again.

The authors of the paper concluded
“The lesson from the last interglacial “greenhouse” in the Bahamas is that the closing of that interval brought sea-level changes that were rapid and extreme. This has prompted the remark that between the greenhouse and the icehouse lies a climatic “madhouse”!

That pretty much says ‘Global Warming’ at the end of a interglacial means nothing. And yes we are at the end. Actually the Little Ice Age was ~ when the timing for the end per the Milancovitch Cycles.

Speaking of LEAP here is another paper that thinks we will bump along in the Wild Weather near but not at glacial inception.

….The onset of the LEAP occurred within less than two decades, demonstrating the existence of a sharp threshold, which must be near 416 Wm2, which is the 65oN July insolation for 118 kyr BP (ref. 9). This value is only slightly below today’s value of 428 Wm2. Insolation will remain at this level slightly above the glacial inception for the next 4,000 years before it then increases again…..

Even NSIDC shows Arctic sea ice within 0.122 Wadhams of the previous minimum.

Yes the wobbly jet stream is causing irregularities, but the REAL issue is the massive cold that is being sucked down over populated and food growing areas.

That is the real problem, NOT the Arctic sea ice, which is STILL anomalously high compare the whole of the Holocene except the Little ICE Age

  11. dp says:

Warm air entering the Arctic is doomed to lose its heat to space via radiation. This is a net cooling event. It represents existing energy leaving the Earth system, not new energy arriving from solar heating.

    • Caleb says:

Besides the heat lost from air transported north, the cold air bumped south has created snow-cover further south, where the sun does shine in the winter, but is reflected most efficiently away from earth by freshly fallen snow.

In fact, in terms of the “albedo” equation, that patch of snow in the Sahara reflected more sun, even if it melted in six hours, then the entire area north of the arctic circle reflected today, (because there is no sunshine north of the Arctic Circle on December 21.)

In other words, in terms of heat-loss, it is a double-whammy to transport mild air north to where there is no sunshine, and to transport snow south where there is sunshine.

Hey guys love your website and the comments section is awesome and heaps of fun.

        • Bipedalist says:

It’s simple physics. Heat is continually being transferred out to space. The rate of heat transfer depends on the temperature difference between two systems and the medium it travels through. Look at the Wikipedia article on heat transfer. The earth is one system and space is the other. Increase the temperature of the north pole and combine it with a reduced thickness of the medium and reduce the heat trapping abilities of that medium and you have much faster heat transfer from that portion of the earth to space.

        • AndyG55 says:

You come in making stupid comments.. expect to be called on it.

      • Gail Combs says:

You are correct, Andy. The trolls are getting really really dumb. ZERO knowledge of Physics. He never heard of Random Walk or Mean Free Path or the lifetime of the excited state (CO2) vs the mean free time between molecular collisions or hot air rises….

He also misses the fact that THE primary ‘GHG’ is water vapor comprising on average 4% of the troposphere while CO2 is only 400 parts per million. In the Arctic and Antarctic esp very cold air is DRY. So not only is the atmosphere thinner but there are less IR active gas molecules to ‘capture’ the photons as they head out to space.

He you go Stupid Puppy, ONE fact you just might be able to understand.
NSIDC – Cryosphere Arctic Meteorology: Factors Affecting Arctic Weather and Climate

Air is a mixture of gases, which includes nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor (water in its gas form). Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in air. All air contains at least some water vapor, but the amount of water vapor changes a lot from place to place and from time to time…

Overall, humidity in the Arctic atmosphere is low. In some places, Arctic air is as dry as air in the Sahara desert. Humidity tends to be higher over the oceans and in coastal areas in summer, when water vapor evaporates from the relatively warm ocean surfaces. Humidity is lower over land areas, such as Canada, where there is less water to evaporate. In winter, humidity is very low because surface temperatures are very cold and very little water evaporates into the atmosphere. At this time of year, sea ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean, preventing evaporation from ocean water.

There is a long-term dataset of humidity profiles from routine radiosonde measurements. Graphs show water vapor (Monthly averaged water vapour content) from November to March at ~ 100 ppmv rising to a peak of ~600 ppmv in July.

OT. Indiana DOT gave me an early Christmas “present”.

I have never had a speeding ticket in over 1,200,000 miles and over a decade driving my big truck.

Wednesday this week while sitting in the barbers chair I got the call at 11:30. 43,000 lb of Red Gold Company canned tomato products to go to C&S warehousing in York, PA. Delivery appointment 07:00 Thursday morning.

Told me that the load would be picked up at Red Gold by another driver and it was due back to our terminal at 12:30 for me to pick up. So I was at the terminal ready to go at 12:15. Well there were complications so the driver bringing it back did not arrive until 15:45 and I departed the terminal at 16:15.

Leaving the terminal bound for I-70 East I always turn off of 73rd st where the terminal is located onto Indiana Hwy 9 south and take that the 5 miles to Pendleton, IN where it junctions with Indiana Hwy 38.

I don’t every speed on that road. There is a State Police post just down the road and cops are quite often driving down that road. After I went through the first traffic light just before going into Pendleton I noticed in my rear view mirror an unmarked gray State Police accelerate through the intersection behind me on a stale yellow. In Pendleton he put on his lights and beeped his siren.

I pulled over with flashers on and got my permit book and license ready and put the E-log on “DOT inspection” as per procedure.

There was no talking to the little twerp DOT officer. “I’m stopping you for speeding. You were doing 49 mph in a 40 mph. I’m not going to give you a ticket. License, Registration, Permit book, and trailer registration. Show me your medical card and pull up the last eight days on your E-log for so I can review the last 8 days of logs.”

I did as I was told not saying anything except I would have to go back to the trailer to get it’s registration from it’s holder on the nose. “Bring that back to my car when you get it” was his response as he reviewed my E-log.

The little twerp wrote me a “Warning”. Now you probably think he was doing me a favor so I would have no fine to pay but you would be wrong. First off I wasn’t speeding and so any warning or citation he wrote would be fallacious . But secondly because he did not cite me he removed the possibility of me contesting him in court.

You see, even a warning goes on the record of a commercial driver and the points are assessed against him in his record and stay there for 3 years before they drop off. It also goes on the CSA score of the company the driver works for. The over all CSA score for the company determines everything from insurance rates, to how much their targeted for inspections and being pulled into to weigh stations.

By law a driver is required to turn in such a warning to his company within 4 weeks of it’s issuance. I went in yesterday to the Safety department at the company to turn in the fallacious paperwork and upon inquiry was informed I had no recourse. Since it was a warning and not a citation there is no legal recourse for disputing it in any forum that does not come back to the issuing officer as the determining factor.

So Merry Christmas. My perfect record is no more.

    • Gail Combs says:

Too bad you did not have your cam pointed at the speedometer.

Some crooked cop that continually was ticketing truckers in Calif. picked the wrong truck. The guy was recording for a training film and had a video pointed so it showed the speedometer and it was complete with sound.

The cop accused the driver of offensive language too. The film showed the trucker was doing under the speed limit and it was the cop swearing a blue streak. I wonder how many truckers went back after that town once the cop was shown to be crooked?

    • Gail Combs says:

      RAH,
In thinking about your warning ticket a bit more, you might want to talk to a lawyer about it. Your company is not going to give a rat’s butt about it and you insurance company will be happy because they get to charge you more for no really good reason. Actually talk to a couple of lawyers.

Technically that warning ticket is ‘unconstitutional’ because you have no ability to defend yourself.

  15. RAH says:

The QualCom satellite system continuously monitors and records speed and location and many other things and is admissible as evidence in court. The effect on insurance rates is for the company and not my own.

I’ve always had respect for the police and the vast majority I’ve ever ran into deserved that respect. This one did not.

    • Gail Combs says:

Believe me I understand. Getting a ticket you deserve is one thing. Getting a ticket because a cop has to meet a quota so some town can fill their coffers really grates.
