*They* are in denial of the facts.
Naah…I think it is just plain old stupidity at work.
The Jesuit paper says:
1897 Oct 7-16 710.00 Guiam, Samar
The NYT says:
“The typhoon which swept over the Philippine Islands on Oct 6…”
Another article from the same period says:
A GREAT HURRICANE.
At Leyte, the damages caused by the late hurricane were estimated at 7,500,000 francs, and a thousand natives were drowned. Tackloban Island, near Samar, was also devastated.

This one shows a bit of originality…
HURRICANE IN THE PHILIPPINES.
THURSDAY ISLAND, November 26. Latest Eastern files received here give reports of a terrible hurricane which occurred in the early part of October in the Philippine Islands. Three vessels were wrecked, and there was also great loss of life. The town of Hernani, in the island of Sanar, is reported to have disappeared entirely, and a new island was thrown up off the coast.
