    Notice that, except for two regions, one of which is over part of the US, the entire northern hemisphere is warmer than normal. You should then ask: What is causing this? The answer is the jet stream has slowed and bunched up. We have discussed this before. It is believed that the slowing of the jet stream is caused by a reduction in the temperature difference between the Arctic air mass and the lower latitudes. Higher latitudes during Southern Hemisphere winter receive no such augmentation, and the increased latitudinal temperature gradient results in stronger stratospheric west winds. Via the interaction of these wind changes and planetary waves propagating up from the troposphere, the circulation in the stratosphere weakens, a response characterized by greater relative upwelling in the Southern Hemisphere extratropics, and more downwelling in the northern extratropics. This downwelling has a tendency to extend into the troposphere, limiting convection and rainfall during Northern Hemisphere summer at these latitudes, producing drier conditions. This effect is seen in some paleoclimate records and has been attributed to solar influence.

      UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Depletion of Antarctic ozone is a more important factor than increasing greenhouse gases in shifting the Southern Hemisphere jet stream in a southward direction, according to researchers at Penn State.

      “Previous research suggests that this southward shift in the jet stream has contributed to changes in ocean circulation patterns and precipitation patterns in the Southern Hemisphere, both of which can have important impacts on people’s livelihoods,” said Sukyoung Lee, professor of meteorology.

      According to Lee, based on modeling studies, both ozone depletion and greenhouse gas increase are thought to have contributed to the southward shift of the Southern Hemisphere jet stream, with the former having a greater impact. But until now, no one has been able to determine the extent to which each of these two forcings has contributed to the shift using observational data.

      “Understanding the differences between these two forcings is important in predicting what will happen as the ozone hole recovers,” she said. ”

      To get funding and through peer-review got have that reference to Greenhouse gases. Note it is NOT CO2 so that means WATER.

        Gail, as usual, your verbal avalanche has little to do with the subject. It is talking about the southern hemisphere, which has nothing to do with this. You continue to try to overwhelm your opponents with diatribes of great length, and with many unrelated graphs, and often with animated gifs that are of no value at all.

        Why does the ozone hole form over Antarctica ?

        The answer is essentially ‘because of the weather in the ozone layer’. In order for rapid ozone destruction to happen, clouds (known as PSCs, Stratospheric Clouds Mother of Pearl or Nacreous Clouds) have to form in the ozone layer. In these clouds surface chemistry takes place. This converts chlorine or bromine (from CFCs and other ozone depleting chemicals) into an active form, so that when there is sunlight, ozone is rapidly destroyed. Without the clouds, there is little or no ozone destruction. Only during the Antarctic winter does the atmosphere get cold enough for these clouds to form widely through the centre of the ozone layer. Elsewhere the atmosphere is just too warm and no clouds form. The northern and southern hemispheres have different ‘weather’ in the ozone layer, and the net result is that the temperature of the Arctic ozone layer during winter is normally some ten degrees warmer than that of the Antarctic. This means that such clouds are rare, but sometimes the ‘weather’ is colder than normal and they do form. Under these circumstances significant ozone depletion can take place over the Arctic, but it is usually for a much shorter period of time and covers a smaller area than in the Antarctic.

          Stratospheric ozone is created and destroyed primarily by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The air in the stratosphere is bombarded continuously with UV radiation from the Sun.When high energy UV rays strike molecules of ordinary oxygen (O2), they split the molecule into two single oxygen atoms.The free oxygen atoms can then combine with oxygen molecules (O2) to form ozone (O3) molecules.

          O2 + UV light ? 2 O
          O + O2 + M ? O3 + M (where M indicates conservation of energy and momentum)

          The same characteristic of ozone that makes it so valuable – its ability to absorb a range of UV radiation – also causes its destruction. When an ozone molecule is exposed to UV energy it may revert back into O2 and O. During dissociation, the atomic and molecular oxygens gain kinetic energy, which produces heat and causes an increase in atmospheric temperature.

          Ozone production is driven by UV radiation of wavelengths less than 240 nm. Ozone dissociation typically produces atomic oxygen (O) that is stable when exposed to longer UV wavelengths, up to 320 nm, and visible light wavelengths of 400-700 nm. Longer wavelength photons can penetrate deeper into the atmosphere, creating regions of ozone production and destruction. When an ozone molecule absorbs even low energy UV, it splits into an ordinary oxygen molecule and a free oxygen atom….

          CFC is too darn heavy to get into the stratosphere. It is inert and the readings for the ozone scare were taken down wind of an active volcano in the antarctic that was/is producing chlorine gas.

We realised that by analysing these measurements in terms of a property known as the “molar density” of the air, we would be able to gain new insight into how the temperature of the air changes with height.

          When we took this approach, we found we were able to accurately describe the changes in temperature with height all the way up to where the balloons burst, i.e., about 35 kilometres (20 miles) high.

          ren, the “changes in water content” your blog refers to are there because of the changes in CO2 content. As CO2 increase, the temperature of the atmosphere increases because of the greenhouse effect. As the temperature increases, the air can hold more water, so as water evaporates from the surface, more of it stays in the air. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas, so when they say they can account for temperature changes by accounting for the water vapor, they are STILL talking about the greenhouse effect.

          Furthermore, these “papers” are not peer reviewed and published.

        Belated muchas gracias, Gail. I stumbled on this by accident as it was not flagged as a reply. 🙂

        I’ve just finished a book you may be interested in: Merchants of Despair, by Robert Zubrin, a Ph.D in nuclear engineering.
        He focuses on the depopulation agendas of the antihumanists, as he terms the 1%s.
        Correctly, IMHO.

        Zubrin wants fusion power developed to reach the stars, Mars to be developed, etc.
        Defo not interested in a feudal future.
