Glaciers were growing during that time, after receding for the previous 200 years.
GISS showed some of this cooling in their 1997 temperature data. But it didn’t fit the narrative, so they later simply eliminated it.
This is also useful to demonstrate what Hansen claimed was the beginnings of global warming in his 1981 paper, where he pointed to 15 years of temperature increases from 1965 to 1980. Hansen, true to his world view, cherry-picked the Agung volcanic eruption temperature dip as the start of his dead-certain man-made temperature increase.
Steve it also looks like you may have found the “pivot point somewhere around 1960” Seems every year except 1964 moves in that adjustment.

Alarmists said we were gonna have more and bigger cyclones and now they say we are gonna have less cyclones. This just after two of the wettest La nina’s hit Eastern Australia. It’s obvious that ANY weather is exaggerated by Alarmists as evidence supporting their religious dogma.
So far we have had just a taste, but what the heck are the alarmists going to do when cycle 24 ends and the SHTF big time as the Polar Express hits repeatedly and with a vengeance?
By 2015 they will be retiring at least 10% of our coal fired generation, most in the mid-Atlantic states. It’s funny how much resistance there is to the idea global cooling was a mainstream scientific idea in the 1970s. Of course, if the IPCC estimates fall any further (the confidence intervals now bottom out at .3 degrees by 2100, down from 1.1 in 2001) the possibility of global cooling will triumphantly rejoin the mainstream in the next IPCC report.
I’ve come to realize there are basically two flavors of people who believe the CAGW hype:
1) Gaia cultists who care more about driving the policy than good science
2) Gullible fools who get all of their information from #1
Most leading climate scientists are G1, most science reporters are G2. Sadly, schools just don’t teach intellectual honesty and rigorous scientific skepticism anymore.
