May 27, 1896—500 killed in St. Louis and East St. Louis. (vs. 255 above – moves up to Equal #2)

“The tornadoes of last month killed between 800 and 1,000 persons, and destroyed $8,000,000 worth of property.”
“In April, 1883, a series of tornadoes carried death and destruction through three of these States, causing the loss of nearly 600 lives.” (This would be a new #2)
