Smoking Gun That The New Hockey Stick Is Junk Science

Ten thousand years ago, most of Canada was covered with ice. This would have reflected most of the summer sunlight received there back into space, and would have had a huge cooling effect on the planet. The 1990 IPCC report correctly showed this, with temperatures about 4C cooler than the Holocene Maximum.

First IPCC report

But the new hockey stick shows temperatures 10,000 years ago within 0.1C of the Holocene Maximum. This is nonsensical and impossible. That huge mass of ice would have kept the planet very cool.

But it is worse than it seems. The latent heat of melting ice also would have had a huge cooling effect. Between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago, most of the ice melted. This would have dominated the energy balance and kept air temperatures very cool.

Additionally, Paul Homewood points out that the melting ice would have flowed into the oceans and cooled sea surface temperatures, compounding the cooling effect.

There is a zero percent chance that the new hockey stick is correct – as they have run afoul of several fundamental principles of physics. Temperatures 10,000 years ago could not have been close to the Holocene maximum.

not just Canada covered in year round ice . . . northern hemisphere winters would have been longer, colder and snowier . . . you don’t have to have year round ice cover to increase albedo, you just need longer periods.

Summer would have been a long weekend in July

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that I reckon there was a neanderthal ancestor of Hansen et al, running around in North America 11,300 years ago saying “The ice is melting, the ice is melting, we’re doomed!!!!” (or neanderthal grunts to that effect). This psychological problem with the Alarmists has to be genetic. Maybe there is a peer reviewed psychology paper worth doing on that. Homo Sapien means thinking or conscious man – and these morons are not either.

        Latest news from Planet Moron:
“They have determined the past 10 years have been hotter than 80 per cent of the past 11,300 years.”

I mean WTF??!! The new hockey stick chart says 100% hotter and the old chart says 100% colder. Beam me up Scotty.

  2. Glacierman says:

On the point about most of the ice melting between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago, see this NOAA Page:

Interesting reading, however most of it is propaganda used to reinforce the current CAGW mantra!
I actually read: climate has been stable for the last ten thousand years!

  3. AND!! All that melting ice would have massively reduced sea temperatures for a long time.

  4. But that news made CNN coverage,. and yet they cancelled the Piers Morgan interview with Mark Morano….it appears CNN is falling in line….so much for balance..

    • Jim Macdonald says:

      Ian,
      You are absolutely right.

      • CNN is finished……………. viewer-ship is so low they don’t even rank as a news org any more……….unless there’s a major U.S. war to cover or a massive hurricane where they can send all their hacks outside to get their clothes ripped off by the “climate changing hurricanes” this pile of trash will go the way of all the others………novelty stations!

  5. nuttinbutdafax says:

    still denying da fax: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/339/6124/1198.abstract

and exactly why would da ice be melting in da first place? better get back to da 101 physicality.

  6. Chewer says:

    Plate tectonic spread is:
    a) plates are moving slower than 18kya
    b) plates are moving faster than 18kya
    c) no noticeable change in speed from 18kya

    The 500mBar jet stream is:
    a) the same height worldwide
    b) higher in the polar regions
    c) closer to the surface in polar regions
    d) can change height (up & down) more so in the polar regions than anywhere else without knowing the cause

Subsidence of oceanic floors during every inter-glacial have:
    a) no measured association in reference to tectonic plate movement
    b) some dependence on plate movement
    c) measurements of sea floor movement and changing physical attributes are unknown

  7. Doug Proctor says:

Approximately 12,500 years ago the Alpine glaciers met the Continental glaciers in a line east of the Rockies and about 2.5km from where I type this in Calgary. A massive, cascading apocalyptic-level dam burst through a series of ice-damned lakes, sweeping huge erratics from the Hinton/west of Edmonton all the way into Montana. There is no doubt about this.

So, yes, 2000 years later there was still a huge continental ice sheet present in the Arctic. We still have remnant stagnant ice masses (misnamed as glaciers) in the Rockies near here: it takes a long time to melt a glacial mass.

Seems that peer-review doesn’t work very well. Too many friends, or just too much anxiety about not filling this month’s journal?

  8. Vern Cornell says:

20,000 years ago the ice started melting and was mostly gone in 8,000 years.
Then Homo sapiens started its history…We started writng things down. And we
get to today where we have a few smarties here as warmists and a few there
as skeptics. Bless both. That event starting the warmth was a major happening…
a realignment of the planets? Or something else?
But why the medievile warming and then the little ice age….aberrations to what?

  9. 2rja says:

That would be, as proven by emails, “Pal” reviewed.
