Ravages Of The CU Professor Brain Beetle

A few years ago progressives were hysterical that pine beetles were going to kill all the trees in Colorado due to global warming.  Here is another fine study by a brilliant CU professor.

You don’t hear about it any more because the cyclical outbreak of the beetles is over. This has been going on for millions of years and has nothing to do with climate.

🙂 ah..thought it had gone quiet on the bug stories..
    err…its a cycle:-)

I don’t know about pine beetles but the Ash borer, which is an invasive species, has been a real problem for us here in the east and Midwest.

Here we see the authors gathering “data” for their paper…

Fiore, a vocal supporter of the Bundy family, said that Ammon Bundy told his wife that Finicum was cooperating with police when he was shot. [and killed] Ryan Bundy was wounded.

Slowly, ever so slowly, we are awakening to a reality that George Orwell thought we would awaken to in “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”

We slept right through 1984, and only a few were awakened twenty-five years later when Climategate emails were released in 2009.

Gail, help me get this clear; the UNION protestors vandalized,
broke into, and occupied the state house in Wisconson. No
        one went to jail.
Now Bundy ,et al, occupy an abandoned buliding, and damage
nothing: The feds send a hit squad, shoot and kill one citizen,
wound others, arrest all of them.

What happened to equal protection of the law?????

I saw lots of dead trees in southwestern Colorado last summer. We were stopped on the highway from Creede to Lake City near Slumgullion Pass where crews were clearing dead trees away near the highway to keep them from falling on the road as they rot. The flag man told me it was the Engleman Spruce trees that died from a severe beetle infestation aggravated by several years of drought a few years ago. There were large patches of dead forest all around this area. Here’s a shot of showing a few of the dead trees by the North Clear Creek Waterfall:

I’m sure there have been plenty of droughts in this area in the past and that these big tree die-offs are probably cyclical and part of the broader eco-system that also includes lighting induced forest fires, which were also prevalent during the drought years. I don’t believe this has anything to do with global warming. It has everything to do with regional droughts.

BTW, if you click on the photo it will take you to the more detailed Flickr photo, where you can click on the photo to see the full resolution. There you can see some of the large dead tree patches on the mountains in the background. Those mountains were probably rounded by being completely covered in glaciers during each of the major glacial periods during the last 1 or 2 million years.

Also, the big cliff with the waterfall is made entirely of volcanic welded tuff layers, which are solidified ash and rock ejecta from numerous large explosive volcanic eruptions in the southwestern Colorado area about 25 to 30 million years ago. That entire region is covered in thousands of feet of these volcanic deposits. Quite amazing to consider how this entire region probably would have been very dangerous for human habitation for millions of years if humans had been around. And 25 million years is not very long on the geological scale.

This thread is a terrific example of one the failures of the AGW crowd to perform a basic element of scientific procedure.
In every event, analyze the long term occurrence of the event as much as possible.

  8. Nobama says:

Seems I read several years back that some of these areas of infestation, taken separately, actually showed cooling during the periods of infestation….. debunking the notion that a minutely warmer atmosphere had anything to do with the infestation.

  9. Pathway says:

Dead trees means more sunlight reaching the ground producing more grass and forbes for more deer, elk, mice, voles etc which means more coyotes hawks, etc. See how nature works.

  10. Andy DC says:

The pine beetles of the 1930’s were cuddly natural beetles. Not at all like today’s dastardly pine beetles, who are on steroids due to Mann-made climate change!
