The Cascades have been getting huge amounts of snow in recent years, and this winter is getting off to a very fast start again.

Tonight Snow… could be heavy at times. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 36 to 42 inches possible.
Monday Snow… could be heavy at times. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 36 to 42 inches possible.
Monday Night Snow… could be heavy at times. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 22 to 28 inches possible.
Tuesday Snow. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 14 to 20 inches possible.
Tuesday Night Snow. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 16 to 22 inches possible.
Wednesday Snow. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 14 inches possible.

Glaciers growing on Mount Shasta , Washington, Alaska.
All seven glaciers on California’s Mount Shasta are growing. This includes Whitney Glacier, the state’s largest. Three of them have doubled in size since 1950.
Scientists first became aware of these growing California glaciers in 2002. Now, nine years later, most media outlets still refuse to acknowledge that these glaciers are growing. After this year’s record snowfall (2011), it will become harder to continue the deception.
A record 98 inches of snow during the month of March and an estimated 6 feet of new powder during the past week extended the ski season. The City of Mount Shasta, sitting at the foot of the mountain about midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, has broken a 108-year-old snowfall record for March with 97.9 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The old mark of 88 inches was set in 1903. For the season, 289 inches (24 feet) of snow has fallen on the city.
Shasta is in the Cascade Range.
Sixteen feet is still only about one fifth of the annual accumulation of snow at Mt Rainier. The all time record was in 1971/72 for Rainier. Kinda blows a hole in the ‘snowpack in the Cascades has declined by 50% since 1950’ doesn’t it?
To be fair to RealClimate, their theory appears to be ‘you can always find, and report, a spot where snowpack has declined. If it has increased you’re looking in the wrong place’.
They also forecast that it would decline another 50% in the next 30 years
Steve, do you have a run of data that would show us what the snow pack history for the Cascades looks like? I grew up skiing in the Cascades since I was 3yrs old. From what I have seen throughout my entire life, there appears (visually) to be absolutely no significant change either way. I would really like to see some data and graphs that show reality.

George Taylor, Oregon State University professor and Oregon State Climatologist, lost his positions because he told the truth about the cyclical nature of snowpack in the Pacific NW, when activists claimed global warming was reducing snowfall. (Officially, he took early retirement.)
