Apparently Lamb and Schneider (who even went on TV to scare us about the oncoming ice age) never existed. Of course, these two money followers completely changed their mind, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t part of the ice age scare.

Deja Vu on the Arctic melting.
The Arctic gains and loses ice extent in a cycle. It must have melted pretty low, much lower than now I guess, as the 1930s approached. Then the Arctic was gaining, maxing out about 1979, just the same year that the disingenuous warmunists used as the starting point of their fear mongering chart of the melting Arctic ice. And now, this year, it seems apparent that the Arctic has turned around again in a dramatic fashion, and has just begun a new decades long cycle of regaining ice extent. There’s no way that they’re hiding this incline: cry Chicken Little cry!
I was around for the 1970’s scare. It happened. Cook and Nuterelli are too young to remember so they think they can just bullshit us as if we weren’t there. I feel like telling my father that WWII didn’t happen.
Yes, I remember it as well. My suspicion is that when the scientists started investigating, they noticed (not saying that they were the first) that there was that pesky 60 – 70 year cycle. “Whoops! Looks like the cooling should reverse in a few years! You know, someone could get a lot of grant money if they predicted warming for the next couple decades…hmmmmmmmm.”

The beginning of the XX century was probably colder than now, but also there were repeated spikes in solar forcing.
In the famous analysis of Frank Lansner,

he notes that in 1923 the decrease of the Arctic ice became more apparent,

and the process continues until ~ the WWII (the “warm years”), when it start to rebound again, from 1946 to 1952, to reache a level similar to the first decade of the XX century,

Notice that in 1956 the ice area was again considerably smaller than in 1952, as a result of the strong cycle C19.
At the beginning of the 1960’s the ice area probably reached another local minimum and began to increase, when the low intensity cycle C20 started.

Note how different are the temperatures in the graph of “climate4you” and the graph of NASA of Steve’s post.
The graph of “climate4you” suggests that not all years of the beginning of the XX century were colder than the 1960’s and, more important, the 1930’s were as hot as the beginning of this century.
In fact,

is precisely the opposite of what the graph of “climate4you” shows

That image is for 70-90 N latitude, well up in the Arctic (and far north of many of the world’s glaciers), not for the measured mean global surface temperature. And this post is about NASA, not HADCRUT. (On the other hand, even in the above graph, the difference between 1923 and 1962 is only about 0.25 degree; I have other graphs, downloaded at various times over the last 3 years, showing the two years virtually at the same temperature. None of these graphs support alarmism over receding glaciers, at all, which is Goddard’s point too.)

Harry, I don’t know if I was clear enough in my post, but I agree with Steve and although I’ve said that 1923 was hotter I didn’t mean “much hotter”.
I was trying to highlight the fact that NASA’s estimate (Hansen’s in fact) is almost certainly a *forgery*. I know the graph of “climate4you” is referent to the N. Pole essentially, but I found it interesting that, in spite of that, it agrees much better with the observed world climate (even 100 years ago) than NASA/Hensen “estimate”.

Almost any reasonable thought fares usually *much better* in terms of predictions than what the warmists say, even extrapolating the N. Pole temps to the entire world.
