Cold Enough For You?

US is having record cold at the solar maximum, with ENSO neutral and no large volcanic eruptions for 20 years.

So what happens at solar minimum, La Nina and the next Pinatubo?

  1. Steve Steve Steve… it’s the Jet Stream. Global Warming has caused it to slow down, and this slowing down has caused a record freeze due to a prolonged ‘blocking action’ or something. This was all predicted by James Hansen or Arrhenius in 1896. Or something.

Record cold doesn’t disprove global warming but it certainly doesn’t help to prove it. 😉

They’d likely blame a volcanic eruption on climate change, and of course, claim “we’d have all melted if it weren’t for that volcano!!”. Seriously

That would be Mr. Bastardi’s ‘Triple Crown of Cooling’ which could shape up to be “Worse than we thought”.

All these cold posting remind me of all those postings about adequate rainfall in the southwest this past summer. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/06/us/colorado-river-drought-forces-a-painful-reckoning-for-states.html?smid=pl-share

    • You are talking about the same Colorado and New Mexico which suffered historic floods last summer from near record rainfall?

      • matayaya says:

No, I was referring to those countless post of yours back in the summer about nothing being unusual about the drought like conditions going on in the southwest. I thought a well written article about the record low levels of the reservoirs of the Colorado river that might make a good follow up to your thesis. I also saw some parallel to all your drought stories with all the snarky cold stories going on now. I guess you won’t be reading and commenting on the article I sent.

Droughts happen. Here’s a nice animation.
          http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2011/07/15/droughts-happen/
Nothing much out of the ordinary. This area is commonly referred to as the “desert southwest”. Yes, it’s dry here.

        • Karl W. Braun says:

According to the New York Times article: “Studies now show that the 20th century was one of the three wettest of the last 13 centuries in the Colorado basin. On average, the Colorado’s flow over that period was actually 15 percent lower than in the 1900s.” So it is indeed the norm that the southwestern US can experience periods of dryness up to present times, irrespective of the level of so called greenhouse gases.

        • matayaya says:

Droughts certainly don’t prove global warming, just as cold temperatures don’t disprove it. I was just pointing out how Steve makes hay against the “warmist” when some claim droughts are a sign of AGW and then he turns around and does the same thing against AGW when it gets cold and icy. It is easy to find hypocrisy in others and then deny it in oneself.

        • David A says:

Stop it. There is no inconsistency. Steve argues against the CAGW claims of disaster, not against the fact that droughts and floods happen. California has had far far far worse droughts and floods. Steve argues against any scientific evidence of an increase in frequency or amplitude of said events due to additional CO2 in the atmosphere, and the facts and peer reviewed literature support him, as well as 30,000 US scientist.

Read the article. Colorado river might run dry. Might not.

Point: As best we know from historic records and archeology, for large-scale organized society to exist here in the beautiful desert southwest, irrigation of some sort is needed. Google Hohokam.

Point: Colorado River is but one source of water to the desert southwest. If it runs dry, a possibility, there are other sources of water. Would they, could they, make up for a dry Colorado river? Don’t know.

Point: Colorado river flow is highly variable. It has flooded. It has dried out. Interesting to note, but not news. What causes the ebb and flow? Good question. Conjecture that somehow Man-Made CO2 controls the climate here is just that – conjecture.

Point: If over time, say 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 years, the Colorado runs dry; what happens to the big urban centers; Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Flagstaff, et al. First off, agriculture uses far more water than urban centers. Probably would progressively make agriculture less viable here. Urban centers? I don’t know. I live here. It’s nice. Especially now with highs in the low 70s (F) and lows in the 40s and crystal clear. It’s actually really nice here.

Point: It is dry here. It is, outside the cities, sparsely populated here. I suppose if all attempts at irrigation failed, (a massive failure of civil engineering – not likely) the population would relocate.

That’s the Climate Change Domino Effect!!! And I thought it was a board game.
Professor Duarte said the Arctic is at “the core of earths system” so if you guys are freezing in the US, that means the core is rotten and we are all doomed!

Trying to cope with the cold? Just send the missus out to collect more firewood. That’s what alarmists recommend.

“MANDY MCANALLY: Nathan, tell us what PAI’s new film “Weathering Change” is about.
NATHAN GOLON: The film is specifically about how women are dealing with climate change now. The reason we’re focusing on women is because women tend to be the ones who are most affected. They’re the ones gathering firewood, they’re the ones gathering water, and largely, they’re the ones doing the agricultural work. So, any change in rain patterns and temperature usually tends to affect them more so than anyone else.” – the climate change domino effect.

send the missus out to collect more firewood
LOL – don’t see a lot of that in my neighborhood.
It’s a big achievement in my house if you can send her out to collect the mail.

        • Hugh K says:

Being a thoughtful/caring husband, I got the little lady some really nifty snow shoes with a matching firewood tote for Christmas so she can haul more wood even faster. I also went that additional mile and fixed tacks on the bottom of her snow shoes so when she is out washing/waxing my car in icy conditions, she won’t slip and scratch the finish. Might be spoiling her, but I’m considering getting her a flintstone for her birthday so if she wants to sleep-in past 4 AM occasionally she can get the fire restarted with minimal trouble. I love going green…

The Prohibitionists (Progressives) also focused on women, because women are more likely to make decisions based on emotion rather than reason. Men tend to be more pragmatic, and more likely to question ‘authority’.

Progressives also know the sway women have on households, as men will generally acquiesce in order to get some peace and quiet.

Lol on the video. It’s like, in a kind of Twilight Zone, the warmists for 30 years have been that group in the room talking about the urgent to need to action… right way. They just keep saying the same thing: we got about 4 years to act, or it’s certain doom. 4 years later, it Deja Vu, Groundhog Day: “we got about 4 years to act, or it’s certain doom.” 4 year later, yeah, rinse and repeat, until hell freezes over. Then 4 years later…

At far as coping with the cold around here, I think I’ll do the hard work of gathering the water from the faucet, and the missus can gather the firewood, do the “agricultural work” in the kitchen. And gather the slugs for dinner. Not!

Drudge reports: South Pole warmer than O’Hare…
“Well” the scare mongering eco-nerds will certainly say “there you go, the South Pole is set to become the only inhabitable place on the planet, when the rest of the world freezes over.” Yeah, in the meantime, there’s that little bit about the record levels of Antarctic ice that just doesn’t jive at all with the “scary scenarios” of runaway melting that the “experts” have been coached to make up.
