Steve Steve Steve… it’s the Jet Stream. Global Warming has caused it to slow down, and this slowing down has caused a record freeze due to a prolonged ‘blocking action’ or something. This was all predicted by James Hansen or Arrhenius in 1896. Or something.
Record cold doesn’t disprove global warming but it certainly doesn’t help to prove it. 😉
Apparently, neither do a multidecadal cooling trend in the US and a flat trend worldwide.
They’d likely blame a volcanic eruption on climate change, and of course, claim “we’d have all melted if it weren’t for that volcano!!”. Seriously

You are talking about the same Colorado and New Mexico which suffered historic floods last summer from near record rainfall?
No, I was referring to those countless post of yours back in the summer about nothing being unusual about the drought like conditions going on in the southwest. I thought a well written article about the record low levels of the reservoirs of the Colorado river that might make a good follow up to your thesis. I also saw some parallel to all your drought stories with all the snarky cold stories going on now. I guess you won’t be reading and commenting on the article I sent.

According to the New York Times article: “Studies now show that the 20th century was one of the three wettest of the last 13 centuries in the Colorado basin. On average, the Colorado’s flow over that period was actually 15 percent lower than in the 1900s.” So it is indeed the norm that the southwestern US can experience periods of dryness up to present times, irrespective of the level of so called greenhouse gases.
Droughts certainly don’t prove global warming, just as cold temperatures don’t disprove it. I was just pointing out how Steve makes hay against the “warmist” when some claim droughts are a sign of AGW and then he turns around and does the same thing against AGW when it gets cold and icy. It is easy to find hypocrisy in others and then deny it in oneself.
Stop it. There is no inconsistency. Steve argues against the CAGW claims of disaster, not against the fact that droughts and floods happen. California has had far far far worse droughts and floods. Steve argues against any scientific evidence of an increase in frequency or amplitude of said events due to additional CO2 in the atmosphere, and the facts and peer reviewed literature support him, as well as 30,000 US scientist.

Point: As best we know from historic records and archeology, for large-scale organized society to exist here in the beautiful desert southwest, irrigation of some sort is needed. Google Hohokam.
Point: Colorado River is but one source of water to the desert southwest. If it runs dry, a possibility, there are other sources of water. Would they, could they, make up for a dry Colorado river? Don’t know.
Point: Colorado river flow is highly variable. It has flooded. It has dried out. Interesting to note, but not news. What causes the ebb and flow? Good question. Conjecture that somehow Man-Made CO2 controls the climate here is just that – conjecture.
Point: If over time, say 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 years, the Colorado runs dry; what happens to the big urban centers; Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Flagstaff, et al. First off, agriculture uses far more water than urban centers. Probably would progressively make agriculture less viable here. Urban centers? I don’t know. I live here. It’s nice. Especially now with highs in the low 70s (F) and lows in the 40s and crystal clear. It’s actually really nice here.
Point: It is dry here. It is, outside the cities, sparsely populated here. I suppose if all attempts at irrigation failed, (a massive failure of civil engineering – not likely) the population would relocate.
Realists wouldn’t be commenting about any weather event if were not for warmists politicizing every drop of rain or lack thereof.

Being a thoughtful/caring husband, I got the little lady some really nifty snow shoes with a matching firewood tote for Christmas so she can haul more wood even faster. I also went that additional mile and fixed tacks on the bottom of her snow shoes so when she is out washing/waxing my car in icy conditions, she won’t slip and scratch the finish. Might be spoiling her, but I’m considering getting her a flintstone for her birthday so if she wants to sleep-in past 4 AM occasionally she can get the fire restarted with minimal trouble. I love going green…
