That rule is one that is being used very effectively against the nations of Europe (and the US as well) these days. “Tolerance to others! We must show tolerance to those unlike ourselves!” That works fine when it is a matter of tolerance to black hair or blonde, or to kilt versus trousers. It is not so workable when it is tolerance to those who wish to destroy religious freedom, secular government, or freedom of speech.
Yes, it’s the most universal rule of bad actors of all stripes. Leninists exploiting bourgeois morals, violent criminals relying on the decency of their targets, Islamists subverting open societies, racist black leaders successfully playing the racism card, Senate Democrats suspending traditional filibuster rules and counting on Republican majority reintroducing them again to Democrats’ minority advantage, etc.
Alinsky did not invent number 4. He just identified what was the most successful strategy in the fight against fair-playing opponents.
