Need another indicator of climate warming in Antarctica? The trio of weather bloggers at Weather Underground report the temperature there likely hit a record-breaking 63.5F (17.5C) Tuesday.
The balmy reading was logged at Argentina’s Esperanza Base, which lies on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Irrespective of whether the record stands, it fits right into the pattern of rapid climate warming recently observed in the Antarctic Peninsula region. The British Antarctic Survey writes this region has warmed about 5F (2.8 C) in the last 50 years. “[This] makes this the most rapidly warming region in the Southern Hemisphere – comparable to rapidly warming regions of the Arctic,” it notes.

It is presently 34 °F and drizzle at Base Esperanza, Antarctica.
This morning it was 32 °F in mid North Carolina. I really could care less that the temps at the tip near Drake Passage is slightly above freezing in the summer/fall. It is not like that area doesn’t get above freezing on occasion.

Our boys at Skeptical Science say that skeptics such as ourselves use any single example of a weather event as proof that global warming doesn’t exist. I don’t see them calling out the guys on their own team.

To be clear here, this is a fallacy for most. I personally though need more than one two-day stretch since 1961 as “proof”. Show me the graph of all temps between 1961 and now. For all I know a week ago it was colder than it was in 1961.
It takes only one or two exceptions to disprove a rule, but consistent accuracy to provisionally validate it.

Temperature went up before sunrise, relative humidity dropped rapidly, wind was out of the west at 43 miles per hour. Looking at the terrain, I think a Föhn effect is very likely.

Well, if you look at this site, it shows it getting up to 59 F on the 24th. If you look, there was a west wind about 33-34 and then later that night, west wind at 65 miles per. Interesting.

I say to the CAGW crowd show me the data that supports your theory either through a change in atmospheric processes as called for by your theory or the data itself showing how this period of change in the climate is something that has never ever happened before and to this degree in such a short period of time.

Nome, AK, or Reykjavik, Iceland, both at ~64N, wouldn’t make the news with temps like that.
Right now it is 0.7 °F in Nome, AK and going up to 27° F on Saturday. The record for this date is 42 °F. The maximum temperature record for Nome for July 30th (picked at random) was 86 °F in 1977 and 57 °F for September 28th. (The data record @ Wunderground looks a bit wacky to me BTW since the same highs keep repeating.)

The attachment shows current conditions, as cold as -96F. There is a report of 36F with heavy snow along the outer edge. It is very unusual to be that far above freezing with heavy snow. Makes me wonder if some of those thermometers down there are not calibrated properly and reading too warm. That would not be the first time that cheating went on.

Hawaii is roughly 2500 miles from the US. Esperanza Base is about 2000 miles from the South Pole, and about 500 miles from Argentina.

sea ice extent now doesn’t matter, it seems to be ice volume which is (“they” say) decreasing.
NASA or some other government agency apparently carried out this volume check. So what’s the real story?
Last report I saw was that the ice is actually thicker than had been supposed.
They need to send ALL the global warming scientists there right now, for winter, to measure all the ice and not allow any ice breakers in to save them.

The alarmists are claiming that Monckton’s analysis showing no warming for 18 years and 3 months is “cherry-picking” whilst panicking over one temperature at one Antarctic point on one day ! Amazing.
And near the most northerly spot on the continent, near the sea, at the end of summer. And, from what I read last wee, the temperature only broke a “record” by a few tenths of a degree, record was from the mid 1970’s I think.
I have to say I was surprised to see this report last week, but of course instantly knew it must be a reading from the coast on the peninsula.
What I had not realized, and thank Tony for pointing out to everyone, was that it was an ephemeral reading due to katabatic wind.
As we all know, compressional winds can cause temperatures to soar, since descending air is warmed at the dry adiabatic rate of 5 1/2 degrees per 1000 feet of elevation change.
I believe that there are peaks near this station as high as 10,000 feet.
In the 1970s they were probably using liquid in glass thermometers and now they use electronic Minimum Maximum Temperature Systems (MMTS) or Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS).
The difference is the inertia of the liquid in glass will be much greater and will not catch the momentary spikes in temperature.

On the nullschool site you can clearly see the foen effect. On the windward side the temp is -ve on the leeward +ve 2.2°c.

I noticed that the Climate Reanalyzer daily summary map for today’s temperature anomalies relative to a 1979-2000 baseline show an anomaly of -2.77C for Antarctica, +0.01C for the SH, +0.80C for the NH, and +0.40C for the entire earth. There are only a few relatively small warm anomalies in the Antarctica area on their maps.
