Any kind of highly compressed gas is a potential bomb, much less a highly flammable one like methane. Compressed natural gas is vastly more dangerous than gasoline.

Compressed fuel gas is safe provided the integrity of the gas tank isn’t compromised – hence its use in domestic settings and BBQs.
Putting them in vehicles where collision is almost inevitable is far more dangerous than gasoline.
Despite Hollywood the vast majority of vehicle collisions involving gasoline do not end up as a fireball.
Gasoline is most flammable when a vapour of significant concentration – this is the principle of the internal combustion engine – convert the liquid to a gas to cause the explosion.
I used to supervise the laws covering the installation of petrol stations – gas stations to you guys – when I worked as an Environmental Health Officer.
Gasoline is nowhere near as explosive as compressed gas.
It’s all about the UEL and LEL and how fast it can occur to a bleve.
Actually, Gasoline (Petrol) is more volatile than CNG. It has a higher flash point than gasoline which makes it harder to ignite and the vapors are lighter than air, so essentially gasoline vapors are more dangerous because they are heavier than air and gather near the ground
You have no idea what you are talking about. The pressure in a CNG tank is 500X higher than the vapor pressure of gasoline at room temperature.
Actually, I do know what I am talking about. I work with this “dangerous” pressure on a daily basis. I have had the proper training and am a State of Oklahoma Certified Alternate Fuels Technician specializing in CNG. When properly installed and maintained ( most people are too lazy to have their NGV properly maintained, which is the reason most accidents happen) it is generally safer than gasoline. When accidents happen, its usually because someone cut corners. The fuel cells are dated and should not be used past their experation date. In my shop, if a customer brings a vehicle in for inspection and the tank is expired, the customer is notified, it is drained and holes are drilled into it to prevent further use, per federal and state law. By the way, in this state; its the republican party that is pushing this fuel, my shop did make ready on several CNG SUV’s that were headed to the Republican National Convention to provide transportation to and from the event in 2012.
You shouldn’t be working on those things in a shop, it should be done outside.
