Howard And Bradley Yes! Dempsey And Jones No!

Outstanding defense and midfield play, but the strikers looked like rank amateurs.

Exciting match and kudos to Klinsmann for a huge improvement from four years ago. They did need Donovan though.

Great effort , but too many missed chances. Hopefully they’ll be able to build on this.

Any predictions on how this world cup impacts the popularity of the sport in this country?

    • Ernest Bush says:

In Yuma, Az, there are around twenty fields for a population of just over 100,000. There are more elsewhere in the county. Boys and girls leagues start around age 6. There are more teams every year. That is what will make it popular and what will produce the qualityofplayers we need to be number one. Eventually there will be a real professional teams.

Meanwhile, we finished inthe top16 of over 200 teams who competed around the world before the actual World Cup. Nothing to sneeze at.

Bradley was the leading passer for Belgium (I counted), truly the worst player on the field. missing the kick was expected, dempsey should have taken that kick.

  4. Anything is possible says:

Heroic loss which gives Americans a taste of what it’s been like to be an English football fan for the last 44 years.

  5. omnologos says:

Must have been the best ever game by an American team. Copa America 2016 is a real possibility.

  6. Ragtag Media says:

Nice job for 19-year-old Julian Green to save face.

  7. The USA looked like a mediocre MLS team for the first 90 minutes… playing hackey sack out there not FUTBOL….

The last 30 minutes? Well.. lots of attacks and missed opportunities.. totally different team.

  8. The German-Americans have done well in this World Cup.

  9. Andy DC says:

I think they can be very proud of themselves. They did far better than expected. Too bad they lost, but they still won, if you know what I mean.

  10. Norm says:

Great game. Came close to putting it away in stoppage at end of regulation. That would have been precious. Without Jozy I wish we would have seen more of Julian Green.

I’ve got no horse in this race so here are some neutral comments.

Tim Howard carried that team to an almost unbelievable victory. Defense? Are you kidding me? 15 saves in regulation time! 15! 5-0 or 6-0 would be the score with any other keeper you have. Even my wife who doesn’t watch or know much about soccer was watching with me and saying “give your goalie a break” and “where are his defenders?”.

I really don’t like the bunker style that Klinsman has them playing. The 2009/10 team was much more effective. They knew what they were good at and went for it. Stopped Spain’s 35 game unbeaten streak, made it to the final of the confed-cup, lead Brazil 2-0 at the half. This team pales in comparrision to those accomplishments. Maybe he doesn’t think he has the players this cycle.

One thing for certain is that you will be in a world of hurt when Tim Howard retires. The good news is that he doesn’t look like a 35 year old out there. You will probably have him for another world cup cylce. He’s never played for a team that I like at the club level but I always love to watch him play. Just an amazing keeper.

Very sweet goal by the kid. Had me doing a double take. Wow. I think the key was that he didn’t have time to over think things. Ball is coming in, defender is closing, keeper in good position so just one time the volley. Whale of a goal. I’d put that one ahead of Cahill’s for degree of difficulty. Courtois still got the fingers on it but not enough.

The set piece at the end was very well executed. Almost pulled it off but no cigar. Courtois came up huge with the save.

It will be interesting to see where Klinsman takes the team from here. You have a long way to go and can’t rely on your keeper playing like a god. Good luck and I’m sure we’ll see you again in 4 years.

pIt was the only WC match I have watch fully. USA were great. If England had plyed with the same passion and effort they would still be in the game.
I agree with your analysis Steven. Dempsy was not at his best but the US defense was formidable. Will we, the french, win it again ? Just might !

  13. moteneek says:

the Donovan that you speak of….doesnt exist anymore. When JK took a roster to Sao Paulo earlier in the year….Donovan couldnt finish the drills let alone play a match. He is overweight and because it is MLS that he compete in, he didnt need to get back into shape after his Cambodia sabbatical

  14. Donovan?

I though Dylan was much better!

    What about Desolation Row?
