North Carolina has ICE which is worse. Had to use crampons to go out and feed this morning. Per County law I made sure all the critters had access to shelter. The Shetland ponies completely ignored their shelters and are now munching hay with an inch of ice on their backs. Well insulated little critters.
I think I’m just west of you Gail (Piedmont Triad) and we got our usual winter precipitation, which is sleet and freezing rain. Never snow. Got about an inch, which is enough. More expected later in the week. We’re also expecting our coldest February nighttime temps since about 1936 so this mess won’t melt for a while. Global warming, fun stuff /sarc.

Don’t cry for the children of Florida. We don’t see snow much down here, and we don’t really need to see any.
If the entire planet had the same climate of the deep south in the US, what would be the problem? Would the growing season be too long to suit everyone? Would the lack of people freezing to death be a problem? Or would it be that you have to mow your grass for a much longer part of the year here than in New York? Why does warmth scare so many people?
I would like the climate here to warm to where it is just like that of the rain forests of the equator. Too bad releasing CO2 does not do a darn thing to warm the planet.
The freeze line has already moved quite a bit South in the 25 years I’ve been in Florida. I used to be surrounded by orange and tangerine groves. There is only one large orange grove where we are now and most of the groves on the West side of “Orange” county where we used to live are long gone. I don’t even think you can see an orange grove from the Citrus Tower in Clermont anymore.
That Global “Warming” sure has been a boon to the citrus industry here in Florida.</sarc>
Yes, I remember all the freezes that wiped out the commercial citrus groves of central Florida. In those days I had moved north and each summer would bring my wife down home to visit. We drove through miles and miles of dead orange trees each summer. It was terrible.
Any honest look at the real world tells us that the whole “catastrophic anthropogenic global warming” scare is pure heifer dust. I am saddened at the thought of how many people have been taken in by this ridiculous hoax.
Nothing like plants to tell you the truth about the climate. That is why I like the the Köppen system to classify a climate.
Of course trying to get the web to cough-up the historic charts of any detail to compare to today is just about impossible.
The last time I was there, there was no citrus being grown in Cirtrus County, FL, the reason being that the citrus industry was forced south by repeated severe freezes. Totally consistent with global warming (sarc).
Warmer winters for the US is caused by global warming. So are colder and average winters. Brrrrr.

When I read the original “children just won’t know what snow is … ” article, I thought they meant there would be no snow within 18 years. I never in my wildest dream dreamt that what they actually meant is that they intended such mind numbingly bad teaching that children will would literally know nothing about snow or anything else.
Ask a modern kid “what is snow “, and you are likely to get the response “that’s not something we get taught”.

I dropped my subscription to NG in the 90s because of articles of this caliber. At that time I had a 70+ year collection of the magazines proudly displayed in custom shelving in my living room. Not any more.
There tends to be rainfall in the southwest desert when solar activity is high. When solar activity is normal or lower than normal desertification returns after some time lag. That is happening now and is likely to continue for our lifetimes.
Since large earthquakes tend to correlate with solar minimums I’m not sure suggestions by NG commenters to build massive aqueducts are wise.
If large ice sheets develop in coming centuries (possible, but I’m not sure they will) the weather patterns will change and possibly this area will green up.
National Geographic was taken over by a bunch of lunatics. I have read it since childhood and now find it nearly unendurable. Every issue is now about global warming.
I had a subscription with Scientific American until ’09 when I couldn’t take any more AGW propaganda. They sent me an e mail asking me if I would consider another subscription. I told them, ‘yes’, when you get off Algores Global Warming Bandwagon. Never heard back.
Replace “National Geographic” with just about any formerly respected scientific journal.

Given NC will have snow tommorow and will be down to -1° F on Thursday, the possibility certainly exists.
Lake City, Florida will be 36° F and rain tonite and clear and 25° F Thursday
Tallahassee, Florida will be 34° F and rain tonite and clear and 26° F Thursday
Whiting Florida had a low of 33 °F today.
Pensacola Florida had a low of 34° F today with cloudy and 32° F tonight.
The clear nights are always much colder which is why we often see temperatures below freezing but see snow rarely.

Hey another reason to go to Hawaii. Ski Hawaii! I’ve skied Germany, France, Norway, Italy, and even Lebanon. Skied California, Utah, Colorado, Michigan, Vermont, New hampshire, Alaska, and even Ohio and Indiana. But Hawaii? Just imagine coming off the slope and a hour later be in your swim suit swimming off some great beach with great surf.
