So I am driving up I-25 in Denver around a blind curve, and there is a work truck stopped in the middle of an open lane, on the wrong side of the cones. I hit my brakes and started to slide left to get out of the way of any tailgaters, and BAM I get hit by a pickup truck doing probably doing 25 MPH over the speed limit. My car left skid marks 25 feet long from being pushed by the collision.
The scumbag in the pickup drove off, but fortunately there was a witness who called the police. Hopefully he will be spending lots of time at Penn State (or some combination of those words) with the other criminals. I assume he was drunk or stoned and didn’t want anyone to find out. Did he really think he was going to get away with it?
My $2000 Craigslist 1998 Isuzu Rodeo suffered amazingly little damage, and I was able to drive home after deflating the spare tire which was jammed behind the drive shaft. The pickup truck left lots of parts on the road, and a little mousy 18 year old girl was “driving” the work vehicle parked in the middle of the Interstate on the wrong side of the orange cones.
Two weeks ago, one of my windows was shattered on I-25 in Denver when someone threw a rock from the side of the road.

There’s a 97% certainty it was caused by global warming addling her brain !!!

Pickup trucks don’t have brakes to match their moving mass.
Cars don’t have mass to match their breaks. 😉
That is unfortunately something I learned personally when the brake lines on my dad’s truck exploded going down a big hill.

It is not the ” brakes to match their moving mass” it is the light rear end of a pick-up that means very little traction on the rear tires if you are not carrying a load. If you have a light rear end or worse are pulling a trailer without brakes you could easily find the vehicle has done a 180 and you are now facing backwards especially when braking going down a hill.
If you drive a pick-up and you have any brains you make DARN SURE you do not tailgate. (We have five pick-ups and no cars. Three are attached to trailers most of the time.)
Some load on the bed, some passengers, in a couple of years old truck with worn brakes, worn tires; you can easily double or triple your ideal breaking distance.
John, That is why I am very very picky about the condition of my brakes. Also my Trucks are all twenty two years old or older.
Without some luck nobody would live to be a 100 years young.
A hit from behind on your bike is much more complicated to survive. That’s why I always try to go faster than the cars.

Well, here I go being politically incorrect and spouting my knee-jerk reaction.
What are the chances that the person that hit Tony is an “undocumented” visitor?
I don’t overly fault the truck for the rear end collision. We’ve all had moments where we just don’t pay as much attention as we need to. It only takes a second of inattention. That’s why I always try to leave a lot of space between me and the car ahead of me.
But driving off after rear-ending someone absolutely changes things. I really hope they get the person.
Must be hard for you not to succumb to despair of your fellow man/person. Rejoice! You survived another close call. You are being saved for better days.
