Do you really think the Smithsonian was aiming to generate propaganda about the climate, or AGW, in 1937?? It is well known that aridity is a side effect of ice-age intensification, though this fact may not have been known in 1937. The article only suggests that a major drought likely caused the natives to migrate Eastward. The dustbowl in comparison was a very different response of land to drought in that the plow was able to expose more soil to drying and wind, and was more catastrophic in terms of affecting settlements. Tony is perfectly on target in pointing out the irrelevancy of CO2 in terms of cyclical droughts. In fact, more CO2 would help prevent future dustbowls due to increased plant growth. Regardless of warming, or cooling. I think it’s really interesting that if White Rot Fungi had not evolved at the end of the Carboniferous, to break down Lignin, the present day Earth might be devoid of life. As by that time so much CO2 had been taken out of the atmosphere, levels were down to 150ppm. Not far below that, all plant life ceases, then shortly all life ceases.

an interesting question would be determine where we are in the solar calendar as to droughts returning to the Great Plains [which is currently still the bread- and food basket of the world]
The article appears to have written in the middle of the Dust Bowl drought which happened from 1932 until 1939 and drought conditions there returned two decades or so later.

among a number of calculations, of which the above is only but one, I have come to believe that currently we are comparable to the [solar] situation as it was in 1928. (2015-87=1928)
That means we really don’t have much more than 4 or 5 years left.
WHAT MUST WE DO?
? We urgently need to develop and encourage more agriculture at lower latitudes, like in Africa and/or South America. This is where we can expect to find warmth and more rain during a global cooling period.
? We need to warn the farmers living at the higher latitudes (>40) who already suffered poor crops due to the droughts that things are not going to get better there for the next few decades. It will only get worse as time goes by.
? We also have to provide more protection against more precipitation at certain places of lower latitudes (FLOODS!), <[30] latitude, especially around the equator.

I think the biggest problem are the droughts coming to the Great Plains.
The Dust Bowl drought 1932-1939 was one of the worst environmental disasters of the Twentieth Century anywhere in the world. A list of all the people responsible for this fraud needs to drawn up. They should just be fired or retired or inactivated or given other duties such as simply doing the daily weather. I do not condone jail time for any of them as they probably thought they were doing it for the “good of the earth”. It happens all the time… same as with Karl Marx, socialism they all though they were 100% correct etc LOL
That ain’t gonna happen. All we can do is try to stem the tide and minimize the damage they are trying to do. In the end, what this is really all about is freedom. What is at stake is self determination.
