There are 318 US HCN stations which recorded temperatures at morning or night on July 15, 1936. These stations could not possibly have double counted 90 degree temperatures on that date, which is the theory that NCDC uses as justification for cooling the past.
Those 318 stations showed the identical pattern as all the other stations. The 1930s were much hotter, the US has dramatically cooled, and is now near record cold. The TOBS adjustments and NCDC US temperature graphs showing warming are 100% fraudulent.

I’m glad you brought this up Oliver, for that triggered a memory of mine from chemistry. You left off one key term. It is binding energy per nucleon and it is the net of the strong force – electrostatic repulsion of the protons (which is, I guess, where the controversy is derived from given if p+ + e- n, then there cannot be electrostatic repulsion from a pair or more of neutrons, which says nothing about some other kind of neutron repulsion, though I’ve seen no evidence of this, for whatever that’s worth). Given that definition, maximizing the binding energy per nucleon means that you add the masses of the number of free protons and neutrons then compare that mass to the condensed/bound nucleons in the atomic nucleus. Thus, the nuclear reactions proceed as expected and yield the bounds on the energies of the products.

Since the number of nucleons is unchanged in beta decay, it is unnecessary to use the more awkward expression.
Oliver, you’re thinking that the binding energy per nucleon means that the resultant nucleus is at a higher energy state if the number is higher. Now I might be wrong, but when I took chemistry the higher the binding energy per nucleon represented a lower energy state because that meant that the nucleons were ‘bound tighter’. Add up the free masses of the numbers of protons and neutrons. For Tritium (H3) that’s one proton at 1.007 plus two neutrons at 1.009 = 3.046. The mass of the tritium atom is 3.016, so by the binding energy per nucleon, fusing the porton and neutons into a tritum nucleus releases the difference between 3.046 and 3.016. For Tritium -> Helium 3, that’s 3.01605 – 3.01603 = 0.00002 and that difference is carried by the ejected electron and an electron antineutrino.

I haven’t studied this, so there might be a stupidly obvious answer, but shouldn’t you be plotting more than one trace here (for comparative purposes)? I mean, morning loggers, vs night loggers, vs all stations, each in a different colour.
Since the quantity measured is percentage of days, should be quite comparable, regardless of the filter imposed.

These are recording thermometers. They record the high and the low following each reset. NCDC (and other adjusters) make an adjustment that they say is for stations that take readings in the heat of the day, as the reading immediately after reset will record a uniquely warm temperature “twice” – once immediately before reset and again immediately after reset. So a record setting high temperature will show up on 2 days instead of just one day. The NCDC adjusts historic temperatures “down” to compensate for this systematic problem, this is called the TOBS adjustment for “Time of OBServation”.
Steve only looked at stations that had never had an afternoon reading (so ther is no need for adjustment). His argument is that NCDC is making a TOBS adjustment to sites that don’t require a TOBS adjustment.
So his argument does not require the graphing of stations that have other times of observation.
It seems that the “adjustment” algorithm is the same mechanism used in the Hokey Stick – any white noise fed into it will be adjusted upwards.

Steve: This is a subject that is ripe for your analysis. Water Temps in Lake Michigan are well below normal for this time of year, particularly after the last two polar cold fronts.

On the bright side, it means the lake effect snow season will short. (I live near the snow belt and we get “belted” occasionally) And a cooler lake means the lake effect fall monsoons may not be as heavy. Snow will start earlier.

The USDA altered the growing zone information way to quickly. They believed in the NOAA adjustments and they assumed that the warming was here to stay. This area has always had the occasional -20F with one night of -30F in the 1994 (killed my peach trees to the snow line).
Fortunately I buy juice of some tough as nails, zone 5 hybrids for wine making. Though ripening may be an issue with cool lake temperatures. Maybe I’ll do Italian juice this year or skip a year.
Here in Florida, the regions suitable for commercial citrus are about 120 miles south of where they were a century ago. I guess strip-bark pine trees make good thermometers, but orange trees are too stupid to understand.
My mother lives in north central Florida, and what was once literally the postcard picture of orange groves, is now horse country. The freezes of 1983 and 1985 wiped out the commercial groves there, the growers just bulldozed them down and moved south.

I remember those freezes for they produces some of the coldest temperatures in Alabama at the time. When I visited Orlando in 1989, you could see the dead orange trees from the highway. Now, there are condos, etc in some of those places and pasture in others. I suspect the trees now are pines, mostly with maybe some oaks, outside of some ornamentals folk plant in their yards.
I lived in New York State in various town that got smacked with the ‘Lake Effect’ temps of -30F were not all that uncommon in the 1960/1970s

What I find interesting is the high temperatures recorded at these stations in the morning and late evening. Usually the hottest time of the day is late afternoon. If anything these temps should be adjusted upwards.

I have pointed that out for years but most are in complete denial. They do not want to admit they have been scammed by their own government, and by the Universities they held in esteem.

if the data prior to adjustments show a different PDF than the data after adjustments, that is evidence of fraud. the point being that when adjustments are fraudulent, it is hard for the fraud to control both the average and the distribution at the same time.
