It appears Kind Canute’s intention was to demonstrate to his sycophantic and incompetent courtiers that he wasn’t taking any of their nonsense and knew he was just a mere man who could not stop the tides.
However – notice the way that the modern “courtiers” of academia don’t do a lot at all to suggest that it was their breed which is the butt of this story.
Another similar fable is the idea that ancient people thought the world was flat. The truth is that people always knew the world was rounded (if you sit in a small boat at sea you can see this). It was not until academics started sitting in ivory towers and telling the rest of us what to believe that any group began to believe the nonsense of a round world. So, yet again it was the “intellectual elite” who proved that they were just numpties and then spread the story that everyone else – particularly the ordinary folk in their boats – believed the world was flat – when the reality is that yet again it was the arrogant people in their ivory towers that made the mistake.

Speaking of burning people alive, we didn’t hear much about O’Bomber’s favorite Nazis burning people alive in Odessa last spring. Nor do we hear much about his client Ukraine army preferentially shelling civilian targets in cities to the point of running out of artillery shells to defend themselves from the separatists. Apparently ethnic cleansing (causing ethnic Russians to flee to Russia) had priority over military strategy.
Don’t you worry, we have NASA working on the problem. Remember this…Bolden said the president encouraged him to “find a way to reach out to the Muslim world” — a goal he described as “perhaps foremost.”

The Islamists have become quite adept at video and photographic propaganda. I am certain that it was no accident that they put the tallest Muslims and shortest Christians at the front of the photo. If you look to the back of the line, it appears there is little height difference. They are in recruiting mode after all.
The first one at least looks female. (width of hips vs shoulders)
The height relationship is 6 to 5 for the second pair, pretty extreme since average for Libyans and Egyptians is about 5’7″. The bits of video I saw didn’t look so extreme, so maybe this is a Photoshopped still.
Blowing up the source image, the shorties appear male, with short haircuts and some facial hair. They’re wearing well-tailored orange suits for unusually-short prisoners. I suppose ISIS didn’t want anyone tripping on an overlong pant leg.
