Settled Science From 1969

In 1969 the New York Times predicted an ice-free Arctic by 1989, and a new ice age – during the same week.

Anyone who doesn’t believe clueless climate scientists is an evil denier, who needs to be singled out by the White House.

Sorry Steve, they’re not incompatible. The development of the Ewing/Donn theory REQUIRES an ice-free open Arctic to generate a new ice age, (constant unending “Ocean Effect” snow on the surrounding land) and at the time these articles were juxtaposed, it made eminent sense, and still does!

    • daveandrews723 says:

tomwys1… But now an ice-free arctic is will help lead to unmitigated global warming. Which is it? You can’t have it both ways. Face it, climate scientists were talking through their hats in 1969 and they are talking through their hats today. They do not have a clue about the future of the earth’s climate or the actual effect of rising CO2 levels on global temperatures.

      • rah says:

Tomwys1 didn’t want it both ways. The “climate scientists” want it both ways. Haven’t you looked at Gails maps of the last glaciation? Those maps she has posted many times show that the majority of Northern Alaska was not under an ice sheet. Why not? And if Northern Alaska was not covered in ice then why would on expect there to be much sea ice off it’s coast?

        • tomwys1 says:

The upslope moisture (snow) extraction from the Brooks Range assured that more glacial ice ended up in central Canada. The Polar Easterlies made sure the heavy glaciation ended up on the Canadian side. Alaska had snow in those days, but not a two mile deep ice sheet.

There’s much more to Ewing/Donn. Attend a “ColderSide” presentation, or look up “Pope’s Climate” where the concepts are elaborated more.

Actually Cook explained how an open Arctic helps heat escape to space while lots of Sea Ice in the Antarctic reflects sunlight. The two combined means the earth cools.

What is interesting is Dr. Joan Feynman et al also saw a lessening in solar strength back in 1997.

    • Gail Combs says:

Actually I think a modification of the Ewing/Donn theory was the theory I was taught in Geology. That is it is precipitation and not just temperature that is the key to glaciation. Super cold temperature comes after the glaciers form due to the major increase in albedo.

The Ewing/Donn theory assumes the moisture is coming from an open Arctic while as Cook suggests the more open the Arctic Sea is the more energy it radiates to space.

A third possibility is what REN has been tossing out. Changes in the sun/solar wind cause changes in the amount of ozone. This coupled with the magnetic poles change the polar jets so we get a strong Polar Express in the winter as the jets go from zonal during an active sun to loopy during a quiet sun.

It is the loopiness that is the key. Warm moist air gets sucked up from the tropics and mixes with the cold polar air. This allows large amounts of snow to be dropped in one storm such as the 7 feet in Buffalo, the over 8 feet in Norway and the 61/2 feet on a Greek island in the Mediterranean. However it is only when you add in mild summers where all the snow doesn’t melt, Like happened in Scotland this summer that you are on your way to forming glaciers

Despite all the propaganda the Warmists are spouting glaciers have been reforming in the last 600 or so years.

      ABSTRACT:
We explore the possibility of building a continuous glacier reconstruction by analyzing the integrated sedimentary response of a large (440 km2) glacierized catchment in western Norway, as recorded in the downstream lake Nerfloen (N61°56′, E6°52′). A multi-proxy numerical analysis demonstrates that it is possible to distinguish a glacier component in the ~8000-yr-long record, based on distinct changes in grain size, geochemistry, and magnetic composition. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reveals a strong common signal in the 15 investigated sedimentary parameters, with the first principal component explaining 77% of the total variability. This signal is interpreted to reflect glacier activity in the upstream catchment, an interpretation that is independently tested through a mineral magnetic provenance analysis of catchment samples. Minimum glacier input is indicated between 6700-5700 cal yr BP, probably reflecting a situation when most glaciers in the catchment had melted away, whereas the highest glacier activity is observed around 600 and 200 cal yr BP. During the local Neoglacial interval (~4200 cal yr BP until present), five individual periods of significantly reduced glacier extent are identified at ~3400, 3000-2700, 2100-2000, 1700-1500, and ~900 cal yr BP.

“…The authors simply state that most glaciers likely didn’t exist 6,000 years ago, but the highest period of the glacial activity [growth] has been in the past 600 years….”

John has some nice graphs and a google map of the area but WordUnimpressed has been censoring his site for the last three of four months so I can not give a live link or the graphs.

At this point I can not even give a link with ***

I’m certain I saw that broadcast. Cronkite was dad’s favorite newsman, and we never missed an airing of CBS news back then, it was a family affair.

And here’s Spock reporting for the ’70s show “In Search Of” on “a new ice age:” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_861us8D9M&info=NimoyIceAge

    • rah says:

I was about 15 years old when I figured out Cronkite had an agenda. His take on the Tet offensive was all it took. A couple years after he reported it as a defeat for the US I came by the official casualty figures for the US and the estimated one for the Viet Cong and realizing that in the end the enemy did not achieve a single objective on the ground while the majority of their irregulars were decimated, I knew then exactly where Walter was coming from. And it wasn’t reporting the facts!

I’ve just invented a new card game, that I think I will call Mann Made Gore-Bull Warming

The dealer(s) are the NOAA, NASA, and any governmentally funded science agencies. The players are anyone who refuses to believe.

The Dealer, after stacking the deck, deals each player 5 cards and himself 7 cards. Each player (if they ever get a turn) may discard and draw new cards up to their entire hand.

The Dealer plays first. Any pair of any kind, dealer wins. Any three totally unrelated cards, dealer wins. Any set of cards numerically summing to an even number, dealer wins.

For Player to win, they must get seven cards in strict numerical sequence.

    Play continues until Dealer wins.

I agree with tomwys1, but for a different reason. The heat that prevents an ice age has to hide in the Arctic, keeping it ice-free, similar to the heat that is now hiding in the deep oceans instead of warming the Earth. Since all the heat is in the Arctic, the rest of the northern hemisphere enters an ice age. Simple.

  6. Eric Simpson says:

There’s now a whole slew of leftist media outlets reporting a warmist study as virtual fact that, as socialist CBS puts it: Arctic sea ice “thinning dramatically,” study finds.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-thinning-dramatically-study-finds/

This is insane what we are up against. The problem is that most of the independent minded public will never see this or similar blogs or any reports of the record or near record growth in Arctic ice over the last few years, not to mention the record Antarctic ice, and not to mention 18 years of zero warming, or not to mention the absolute total failure of their doomsaying climate models, and the failure of ALL their predictions of doom that always never happen (not even close).

The problem is that most people won’t see any of this.

Instead, they like me will be scrolling the likes of Google News and see these headlines, and take that as fact without even looking at the story, and thus continue to believe the bullsh|t from the left wing fear mongers.

Something has to be done to combat this. Something.
