Predict everything! One of these predictions will be correct–eventually.

  2. Crashx says:

    What’s the prediction for —

Guess the date that this pile is completely melted away.

    • Gail Combs says:

It would be very funny if we have such a mild summer in the USA that the pile is still there next winter.

      • MrX says:

I live in Eastern Canada. Having a mild summer where there’s still snow is not funny at all. 🙂 I get the joke, but I’ve been saying this all along… One of the things “climate scientists” have done is make warm summers be out to be bad thing. It is not a bad thing. Warmer climate has always benefited humans and we should all look forward to warm summers. Indeed, if CO2 warms the planet, it should be our duty to pump out as much of it as possible. I tell this to warmists and they freak out. It’s funny.

      • Neal S says:

Al Gore would be out there with a hair dryer or industrial hot air blower trying to get it all melted before the first fall snowfall.

  3. rah says:

I really am sick of driving to MA, NH, NY. Perhaps this next week I’ll get a break since it will be about as miserable here in Indiana as it is in the North East. Was told there was another team run down to Laredo coming up this week. Perhaps I will be lucky enough to get that. A trip to Danny’s for some Choriqueso is sounding pretty good right now.

    • Gail Combs says:

      rah,
Later this week we are getting snow, sleet and ice pellets so they may send you to North Carolina.

    • Frank K. says:

We’re very friendly here in western New Hampshire. 🙂 But you have to like the cold (-2F right now with snow on the way). And, of course, the skiers are LOVING this weather. The powder has been incredible and very unlike most Eastern skiing this time of year.

      • Gail Combs says:

That is why I lived in NH and commuted to Andover MA when I first moved to the area.

And yes the skiing in powder is incredible.

      • rah says:

Ah yes I know they’re loving it. Skied the last two weeks of January for five winters at either Smugglers Notch or Stow back in the 80s. Would stay at Camp Ethan Allen near Jericho, VT. And then went into the field and spent the first two weeks in Feb. skiing around being chased in the White or Green Mtns.

Almost got thrown in jail in Jericho. The local cops loved to try and nail us for DWI when driving from the bars to Camp. Finally one night a fine looking female police officer came into the bar. My buddy and the Sr. Commo man on my team, Sly, sauntered up to her and said: “You know, I would like to see you in nothing but your leather and metal accoutrements!” And it went down hill from there.

Happy Climate Change Valentines Day in Boston, MA. ! Here’s today’s forecast…

..BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO
      7 AM EST MONDAY…
…WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM SUNDAY TO 8 AM
      EST MONDAY…

      * LOCATIONS…EAST COASTAL MASSACHUSETTS.

      * HAZARD TYPES…BLIZZARD CONDITIONS…INCLUDING HEAVY SNOW…
POOR VISIBILITIES…AND STRONG TO DAMAGING WINDS. DANGEROUSLY
      LOW WIND CHILL VALUES.

      * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…10 TO 14 INCHES.

      • Gail Combs says:

There are going to be a heck of a lot of upset ladies who were looking forward to a nice dinner out this evening….

I wonder if that will cause an abrupt about face on CAGW by the fairer sex?

    • Eric Simpson says:

“Heavy Snow!” today and tomorrow in Boston blizzard. And.. also … the 10-day Boston weather report shows more snow on Wednesday, and again on Saturday through Monday. Lol.

Plus, from the NYPost: NYC braces for coldest day in two decades. More examples are cropping up everyday now of what happens when you’ve just gone through a century of out of control virtually straight up hockey stick style warming. http://nypost.com/2015/02/14/city-braces-for-coldest-day-in-two-decades/

As Spock would say: “record cold in the age of runaway global warming is totally logical, there’s no reason to suspect that the leftist activists in charge of the temperature record have manipulated the data to make this freezing world look like it’s the hottest ever.” Of course I’m joking about Spock saying that, but there’s no joke that the radical leftists pushing the global warming scam keep saying that hot causes cold, like John Holdren: “A growing body of evidence suggests that the kind of extreme cold being experienced by much of the United States as we speak is a pattern we can expect to see with increasing frequency, as global warming continues.” -John Holdren, Obama’s Science Czar. Pure idiocy.

  6. GeologyJim says:

My first year in grad school was 1970 at MIT and, just to show things really do go in cycles, I slogged through boatloads of snow all Fall and Winter. Very rude shock for a CA-native, and I wasted no time locating a geology grad program in the West.

My “gorgeous ex-fiance” [to borrow a memorable Willis phrase] and I got snowed in at Cape Cod on Easter Sunday – then went back to CA and got married. Still working after 44 years

No regrets leaving MIT and the East Coast

    Happy Valentines Day to all

    • inMAGICn says:

Jim, not to be old-fashioned, but I hope you had a fiancee and note a fiance.

My family came to California in 1848. We all left.

Why on earth are the dudes in Southern California whining about living in a DESERT?????

It was a desert long ago, it was a desert when I lived there, it is a desert today. A piddling 3 year drought is called the worst in history! That’s a huge laugh.

I wish everyone whining about the California desert be deported immediately to the South Pole.

  7. SMS says:

Still no Ice Age here in Colorado. People talking about lack of snow in the mountains leading to water problems this summer. I’ve lived in Colorado for almost sixty years and this conversation has been repeated almost every year. This year’s drought will no doubt be due to CAGW; unlike the previous sixty years which were caused by mother nature being a bitch.

  8. AZ1971 says:

If these media sources like Science & Mechanics (the precursor to PopSci and PopMech) were reporting that in the 1970’s a new ice age was imminent, and they were using presumably credible “experts” to back up the claim – and if it WASN’T true – why didn’t “the consensus” of climatologists/NOAA/NASA get out there and correct the record for the people that matter most – Joe Average American? Otherwise this comes across as mere tabloid drivel. What studies were referenced to suggest an ice age was coming? Why was the DoD on board? I’ve never understood why the “true” scientists were so complicit in allowing a ruse to be propagated for so long if they didn’t actually believe it themselves. Anyone?

    • Best not to listen to John Cook propaganda

      • ren says:

Tomorrow morning, the people on the east coast will wake up in a white reality. Is this the return of the White Buffalo?

I’m telling Al Sharpstone and Jesse Jackstone on you!!!

    • Neal S says:

Aren’t there people who are now claiming that there never had been a global cooling scare previously? Maybe we should come up with some catchy name for them. Perhaps ‘prior global cooling scare deniers’, or possibly ‘winston smiths’. Isn’t it obvious that none of the predictions have actually come true? I guess not. The ‘BIG LIE’ is entirely too effective.

      • rah says:

It’s like saying there was never a Y2K scare to those of us old enough to have lived it.

        • A C Osborn says:

There was a Y2K scare, but problems were avoided by good old fashioned preventative methods.
Like checking the BIOS of the computers that might be affected and any programs that might need adjusting.
In the end a Non event due to people like Steven and IT departments world wide.

        • Beale says:

Y2K wasn’t quite a non-event. I have read (though I don’t know the details) that there was one fatality with a documented connection to Y2K, in a railroad accident in Russia.

    • Gail Combs says:

Ice Ages Confirmed tells of the exciting time in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970’s when Milutin Milankovitch’s mathematical theory of ice ages was confirmed by research advances in radioactive carbon dating, the discovery that the ratio of two oxygen isotopes could be used for temperature determination and their application to sea cores.

Nigel Calder was reporting about it at New Scientist: Prophet of the Next Ice Age

      ….Kukla warned President Nixon

Those who rewrite the history of climate science to suit the man-made global warming hypothesis hate to be reminded that global cooling and the threat of a new ice age rang alarm bells in the 1960s and 1970s. In the Orwellian manner they try to airbrush out the distinguished experts involved, and to say it was just a scare story dreamed up by stupid reporters like me.

No, we didn’t make it up. I was present in Rome in 1961 when global cooling was already the main concern at a conference of the World Meteorological Organization and Unesco (see the Unesco reference). The discussions were led by Hubert Lamb of the UK Met Office, who went on to found the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.

A persistent concern of Lamb and others was that the world might return to a Little Ice Age like that of 300 years ago. But the improving knowledge of glacial history, and especially the apparent brevity of warm interglacials, prompted anxiety about a full-blown ice age. George Kukla, together with Robert Matthews of Brown University, convened a conference in 1972 entitled “The Present Interglacial: How and When will it End?”, and reported it in Science magazine.

Kukla and Matthews alerted President Richard Nixon, and as a result the US Administration set up a Panel on the Present Interglacial involving the State Department and other agencies. None of us knew then that the mid-century cooling was about to be punctuated by a warming spell from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s.

    • Beale says:

Perhaps this was because the climatologists at that time didn’t know what was going to happen – and knew that they didn’t know.

  9. Neal S says:

I just had an idea on how to gently take advantage of true AGW believers. Using things like ‘sealed air’ or polyair (for shipping there are various sized gas filled plastic ‘pillows’) offer CO2 filled sealed gas to be used as an insulation material. You could charge handsomely for these, but you would also want to include a disclaimer. (Nobody reads those anyway) You could explain that while these likely will insulate just as well as regular air-filled or nitrogen filled items, that the CO2 is NOT actually going to make a big difference AT ALL in the insulating capacity of these devices. These also have an advantage of being somewhat fire-retardant as well. (Although nitrogen would do that too)

Thermal conductivity of CO2 is 0.0093 vs 0.0145 for air. Better, but not really huge improvement either.

But I do think there are already some companies selling gas filled insulated windows and I think in some cases you can get CO2 filled windows as well.

    • rah says:

Argon is the gas of choice for the windows IMO I have them. Low E glass with Argon. Put eight in on the North, south, and west (front) sides of the house. Three simple double hung, a bay window with casements on the side, two double double hung, and two awning types. I have three more in the shed ready to install this summer to finish up the east side. What the Argon really does more than anything is help prevent frost build up on the windows. Good quality windows and doors properly installed and caulked have made a huge difference in the comfort in my home, the original part of which was built in 1944. Though I live in a pretty secure rural area where there is little crime I have security doors for my “screen” doors and they have also helped preventing drafts besides providing a little piece of mind concerning the security of my lady when I’m on the road.

Wind gusts will be around 50 miles per hour in coastal Massachusetts, Simpson said. The Islands and the outer Cape could get wind gusts of 70 miles per hour. Power outages are a possibility, he said.

Temperatures in the eastern part of the state will be around zero with windchills of -20. The western part of the state will have temperatures at 10 below zero with windchills as cold as -35, Simpson said.

Oh quit complaining 🙂 I want a little snow here in MN so we can go CC skiing.

    • rah says:

Personally I would settle for some nice rain and green grass about now.

      • AndyG55 says:

Ha! That’s all very well until you have to mow the grass every week !!

Currently a muggy, humid 28C here in Newy.. (Newcastle NSW Australia)

and the grass is growing at somewhere near 1cmm/day !!

        • Gail Combs says:

Mow? Why mow? I have sheep and goats….

        • AndyG55 says:

          Mail me some !!! 🙂

        • Gail Combs says:

Your in Australia home of the MOBS, I am sure you can find a nice ram lamb or two. Graze them all summer and put them in the freezer come autumn.

        • rah says:

I like mowing my yard. Gives me a good 40 minutes of exercise doing the trimming followed by an hour and a half of sitting on the lawn tractor drinking a cold one or two. Usually followed by putting something on the grill and eating it while sitting out on the deck enjoying the nice looking lawn and surrounding fields. Mowing is a pleasure but shoveling and using the snow blower is hard work.

I was stationed down at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX for about two years and had a lawn of St. Augustine grass to take care of year round and between me and my wife’s green thumb would win “Lawn of the Month” on post quite frequently. Previously I had gone for 10 years either as a trainee or in assignments where I was gone for six to eight months of the year so doing such domestic tasks was a pleasure.

Really got under the skin of some of my peers because on the enlisted evaluation reports I would get an exceptional rating for taking care of government property. Back then getting the top rating in any of the categories was pretty tough and directly effected the speed in advancement in grade/rank. Thus when I ended my time in service I was an E-7/SFC promotable while some of my peers with similar time in service and grade had not yet made the promotable list.

        • Gail Combs says:

          AndyG55,
My husband just walked in the door this morning with a newborn ram lamb who was rejected by its Mom. Biggest darn lamb I have ever seen. It is as big as my 2 month old bottle baby goat and shes bigger than her sibs.

Tell me where you want me to mail that lamb – COD of course. Blasted thing will not shut up!

        • AndyG55 says:

          chuckle. no thanks, Gail.

        • AndyG55 says:

I don’t think Australia Post will let you do that. 🙂

As of midnight Saturday into Sunday, this month became the snowiest on record in Boston, hitting 45.5 total inches, according to the National Weather Service. The last record month was 43.3 inches in January 2005.
As the snow ends, temperatures and wind chills are expected to drop dangerously low.

  16. smamarver says:

Let’s not forget that, for some parts of the world, this winter (2014/2015) was pretty serious. I’m not talking about a new Ice Age, but about snow in areas where it didn’t use to snow (such as Sicily or Greece) or even about the blizzard in New England. As for this phenomenon, it is in close correlation with the ocean (http://www.2007seatraining.de/2015/49.html), pretty much like the entire climate.
