Here in upstate NY we had more snow last night. Cold today, too, another snow storm coming Wednesday.
I have been shoveling snow, and feeding birds like no winter here I can remember. The deer and rabbits have eaten everything they can find, and I have never seen anything close to the amount of missing bark on my trees. And it’s not just the snow, it is the severe cold.
Yep got my birds taken care up. 4lb feeder full and both seed/nut blocks nearly full sized. Birds we see in the winter at our feeders are:
Cardinals
Blue Jays
Tufted Tit Mice
Nut Hatches
Downy Woodpeckers
A larger Red Breasted Woodpecker
Back capped Chickadees
House Finches
Cow Birds
And a variety of Sparrows.
Then there are the ever squawking and bickering European Starlings which periodically come in like an unruly and loud gang in their winter bling markings and try to dominate. But the large Red Breasted Woodpecker that we have named “Pete the Pecker” takes no guff from any of them.
In winter I have all those plus Juncos, Horned Larks, Gold Finches, House Finches, Purple Finches, Mourning Dove, and the occasional Hawk or Falcon perching on top. My Bald Eagles have never bothered with the feeder, they tend to like the tree tops, and every now and again will land on the lawn.
Last year I swear I had a Barn Owl stalking me.
Speaking of birds in peril…

And yet, that’s exactly what happened near Tonopah, Nevada last month during tests of the 110-megawatt Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project.”
“According to Rudy Evenson, Deputy Chief of Communications for Nevada Bureau of Land Management (NBLM) in Reno, as reported by Re Wire, a third of the newly constructed plant was put into action on the morning of Jan. 14, redirecting concentrated solar energy to a point 1,200 feet above the ground.”
“Unfortunately, about two hours into the test, engineers and biologists on site started noticing “streamers” – trails of smoke and steam caused by birds flying directly into the field of solar radiation. What moisture was on them instantly vaporized, and some instantly burst into flames – at least, until they began to frantically flap away. An estimated 130 birds were injured or killed during the test.”

The good news is that the heat and light from the burning birds is also reflected to the focal point of the mirrors, increasing system efficiency.
Wow! Self harvesting fuel! Are burning birds carbon neutral?

This year I even had a snowshoe rabbit come to my feeder, which is a first!
I get tons of Eastern Cottontail rabbits. They come after sunset when the birds leave, and hang around until dawn.
My most unusual bird feeder visitor was a horse, one morning, feeding from a pole feeder.
Right now it’s 28 deg. F here near Anderson, IN with partly cloudy skies and the sun shinning bright on the snow as I write this. I notice that there is a discernible though very gradual trend in the 10 day forecast for the temps rising above freezing. Apparently it’s going to be a pretty darn cool Spring for all of us within the Great Lakes region. I wish it would get above freezing and we would have a nice rain to help clear all of this white stuff away. I have things to do outside this Spring and Summer.
Gotta go. Time to leave for the terminal to get ready to head east to Pottstown, PA. Looks like sunglasses will be essential equipment for this drive. Cold enough that I have my underarmor on. But I feel well rested so it should be pleasant enough. Back in a couple days.
Snowed in Milwaukee on Superbowl Sunday, and it’s still here.
More is less, less is more. Hotter is colder, colder is hotter.
Shame that the chart doesn’t include the snowpack on the iced over Great Lakes.
