Oreskes – The New McCarthy

The filthy movie I went to see the other night was smearing climate skeptics, by trying to link them to the mentality of people who said second hand smoke doesn’t cause cancer back in the 1960’s (during the global cooling scare.)

Everyone was exposed to second hand smoke when I was kid in the US, as are most of the people in Europe today. So I looked up what researchers are currently saying about second hand smoke. The National Cancer Institute says there is no link between second hand smoke and cancer.

The Merchants of Doubt is based on a McCarthyite smear on an unrelated topic, using a 50 year old concept which scientists don’t even currently believe.

The American left are a bunch of endlessly fearful nincompoops who are obsessed with controlling everyone else, and will use any filthy tactic to get there.

The word McCarthyite is in itself a smear. There were KGB agents throughout the US government. Heck Bobby Kennedy had a KGB handler, a KGB colonel Georgi Bolshakov.

THe infiltration of the KGB thoughout our government, Hollywood, our schools, our ‘activist groups’ and newspapers is why the USA is in such a sorry state now.

I agree. To prevent discovery the Sun is the supernova remnant of a supernova that made our elements, birthed the Solar System, sustains our lives, and controls the climate of every planet in the Solar System today, the “best” Ivy League universities and research agencies promoted ad hoc “magical science”, e.g. during the space age.

      1. Superheavy elements magically fissioned in meteorites to obscure “strange xenon” from the supernova birth of the Solar System:

“Strange xenon, extinct superheavy elements and the solar neutrino puzzle,” Science 195, 208-209 (1977) http://www.omatumr.com/archive/StrangeXenon.pdf

      2. A dozen different types of primordial neon (Ne-A, Ne-B, Ne-C, Ne-D, Ne-E, etc) magically emerged from nowhere to obscure solar mass-fractionation of neon isotopes:

“The neon alphabet game”, Proceedings of the Eleventh Lunar Planet Sci. Conf. 15, 879-899 (1980); http://tinyurl.com/2944m9 or http://www.omatumr.com/abstracts2005/Neon_alphabet_game.pdf

Thus was humanity isolated from reality.

Merchants of Doubt is a smear campaign by losers of the AGW debate.

They have good reason for concern: Climategate was but the tip of a giant, 70-year old iceberg of government deception that was intended to save the world from possible nuclear annihilation.

The 1945 decision to hide the source of energy that destroyed Hiroshima instead isolated mankind from the Benevolent Universe that sustains our lives: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10640850/God.pdf

    • The Commies won many battles, some of them decisively. The universal acceptance of the “McCarthyite” myth is one of their most important and lasting victories. There is no greater triumph than having the vanquished adopt the victor’s version of history.

  2. Robertv says:

More than half of a litre of unleaded is not petrol. It is actually a brew of aromatics and if witches had brewed this cauldron, it could not be more evil. The aromatics that replace lead are
Dimethybenzene, Mesitylene, Toluene, Xylene and Benzene.

All of them are declared carcinogens and will cause leukaemia and other cancer related illnesses.

    • R. Shearer says:

There is a maximum aromatics content dictated by EPA, in U.S. I think it’s 25% max and 1% for benzene. It is true that before those regulations, high octane rating could be achieved with high aromatics, perhaps >50% in some cases.

  3. Ben Vorlich says:

I was under the impression that smoking and lung cancer correlated very well but the actual mechanism is unknown. Is that still the case?

  4. bleakhouses says:

Given that an entire generation of kids most exposed to second hand smoke have become adults you would think they would be able to break out the hard stats on this.

Remember those many scenes depicted in Mad Men of two parents smoking in the car, windows up, while there kids jumped around , no seat belts, in the back? That’s not pure Hollywood fiction. The kids of the late 50s-late 60’s grew up with that as a regular occurrence; in the home too. I know I was there. Our parents were very heavy smokers and probably the last to be so. I remember the change when they learned about the harm from smoking. My father struggled to quit, my mom never could. It played a part in killing them both and many of their contemporaries. If they were giving their kids lung cancer we would know it by know.

If you have never read Michael Crichton’s Caltech Lecture from 2003: “Aliens Cause Global Warming” — it is a must read concerning ‘bad science’. He devotes half a dozen paragraphs to the second hand smoke issue starting on page 7 of the text of his speech:

  6. emsnews says:

The sudden rise in cancer mainly in the Northern Hemisphere coincided exactly with frequent nuclear bomb tests.

  8. gator69 says:

My father smoked, as most military men of his generation did. One of my earliest memories is begging him to stop smoking (mom put me up to that one). My brother, mother and I have never had any lung issues, and dad smoked until he died of complications of lung cancer. But dad’s death certificate clearly stated that smoking was not the cause of his lung cancer, exposure to Agent Orange was.

    • DD More says:

My father, also a WWII vet, always thought that the reason the Red Cross was way late in condemning smoking was due to the Red Cross including cigarettes in every care package. They where still in the packets thru the Vietnam war. Guilt complex.

Fun fact: Oswald was killed to prevent a trial and a revival of “McCarthyism” (by a man with terminal cancer who would not be tried either). Then the waters were muddied with absurd conspiracy theories by the media. To this day, most people don’t know that JFK was killed by a Communist in retaliation for the Bay of Pigs and other anti-Communist actions by JFK. A certain famous ethnic group was behind all this.

  10. SMS says:

The lesson learned from the second hand smoke study goes back to Dr. Fred Singer who took exception to the statistics used to originally justify eliminating second hand smoke. Dr. Singer does not like smoking, nor does he condone smoking but he is a good scientist and when he saw the misuse of study results used to declare that second hand smoke was harmful, he was not afraid to point out the problems. Like Dr. Grey, Dr. Singer is a true scientist. Today, whenever Dr. Singer attempts to point our fallacies in climate science studies, he is demonized because of his opposition to the second hand smoke study (that we now know is false and that he was right). Thank you Dr. Singer for being a true scientist.

  11. nigelf says:

As a heavy smoker for 39 years now I always knew the second hand smoke thing was just a con being used to justify the bashing of smokers. As one who gets first hand and second hand smoke all day long I’m living proof that it’s not based on science. If it were true I would have died long ago.
BTW, I don’t have a family doctor and have never been to the hospital for anything related to smoking. As a matter of fact it’s been over a decade since I’ve been to the hospital. I’m not a drag on the health care system and smoking will probably kill me suddenly, sparing the State having to pay me my old age pension. My prediction is I will pay into the system much more than I will take out. Does that classify me as “sustainable”?

    • rah says:

They will give you the blue pill when the time comes. I also smoke. I will also will pay far more into the system than I end up taking out. And if the government really gave a flying F about the true cost there wouldn’t be so many people on food stamps and other forms of government assistance. I have never used any government assistance of any kind during my entire 59 years on this planet and that includes my VA benefits. And if by some twist of fate I end up being a greeter at WalMart with an oxygen cannula in my nose to keep from taking government assistance, then that’s exactly what I’ll do. I damn the takers that do not earn nor try to earn what they take from the rest of us but feel it is the right of those so inclined to receive the benefits promised them for their service or because they have paid into the system.

    • R. Shearer says:

If you care about preventing smoking related diseases, it’s never too early to stop smoking. It’s your decision though.

    • nielszoo says:

Every one of my family (except my sister) and my wife’s family smoked for 35+ years or until they died. All but two are either still alive or beat their actuarial ages by a significant margin… all being over 80 years old. The two who didn’t went from cirrhosis (he drank a LOT) and undiagnosed breast cancer and even then both of them were in their 60’s. Several gene pools here since I’m going back to our grandparents on both sides so color me skeptical about cause and effect on this issue. The ONLY reason I quit was because I refused to pay the insane taxes our out-of-control nanny state placed on tobacco. If I lived closer to Tampa and a “native” American reservation, I wouldn’t have quit.

Is smoking good for you? No, I seriously doubt that it is. Is it the axis of evil? Not even close. I really believe a solid chuck of its demonization was constructed because they needed a demon. Almost every one of the hyped agents of doom falls flat in the long run from DDT to saccharine to cholesterol to red dye #2 to whatever is supposed to be killing us today… correlation is NOT causation. I really believe that society would be in far better shape if we required a license to use statistics in ANY kind of research… except for statistics. The misuse and misrepresentations of data washed through some statistical gobble-d-gook that the researchers who use it doesn’t understand is responsible for far more harm than good today. </rant>

The World Health Organization’s first study on SHS is a textbook example of the right way to conduct an epidemiological study. Unfortunately for them, it yielded unexpected results. They responded by doing a second one, a meta-analysis, that allowed them to extract the results they wanted. This is an analysis of their first study.
    http://www.davehitt.com/facts/who.html
To me the most interesting result was: The only statistically significant number was a decrease in the risk of lung cancer among the children of smokers.

  13. pinroot says:

So she’s comparing skeptics to a group that was ultimately proven correct. I wonder if she groks “irony”?

  14. Ivan says:

McCarthy was not “smearing” anyone, he was a whistle-blower revealing the government conspiracy to protect the communists in the various departments of federal government from exposure. Virtually all people McCarthy named were indeed communist agents of influence. Read M Stanton Evans’ ‘Blacklisted by History’. You are giving to much credit to Oreskes.

  16. KuhnKat says:

Goddard, are you still a Communist?? You throw the old Commie slander McCarthyism around like it means something. The only thing it means is that the commies lied about McCarthy and their buds in the media helped to destroy a good man, for a politician. His destruction warned off all others leaving them to continue their, and others, penetration of our government so that we are now ruled by commies and Islamic types. Continuing to use the smear continues the libel and slander of McCarthy. Comparing Oreskes to McCarthy is your own addition to libeling the man.

  17. KuhnKat says:

Try it this way. You post what you think McCarthy did wrong and I will try and refute it.

  18. higley7 says:

Not only have there been no studies of any kind that show that second-hand smoke affects anyone of any age, but there are idiots out there who would like to demonize third-hand smoke, the smell on your clothes when you come home after being in a place where people were smoking. They want to say the smell alone is a hazard to others’ health.

  19. OrganicFool says:

Tobacco has actually several health benefits. It is fitting the AGW crowd loves to compare it to the demonization of a natural plant because it is more dogma.

Tobacco is not cigarettes. Cigarettes have 600 legal additives. If a person smokes, they should consider additive-free organic tobacco.

Nicotene has protective effects from Parkinsons and Alzheimers shown in several studies. In the China study, those that smoked hand-rolled tobacco had less incidence of certain cancers. Native Americans smoked medicinally. Organic tobacco is also far less addictive and satisfying to the smoker as it has higher nicotene. Smoking low-nicotene cigarettes is about the worse possible solution because a person tends to smoke more to get the desired effect from nicotene.

“In a multivariate analysis, children of mothers who smoked at least 15 cigarettes a day tended to have lower odds for suffering from allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, allergic asthma, atopic eczema and food allergy, compared to children of mothers who had never smoked (ORs 0.6-0.7). Children of fathers who had smoked at least 15 cigarettes a day had a similar tendency (ORs 0.7-0.9).”

HMmm maybe that is why I was the only one in the family who was not an asthmatic…. My parents smoked like chimneys. I never did.

Hey Gail! Just got off the phone with Range Resources in house legal team, and they were very interested in Hopeski’s web postings. I forwarded what I have found in my brief searching, and they asked for any other info that we come across.

You saved me the trouble of alerting them to the dis-info she is spewing.

      • OrganicFool says:

Asthma can be tied to malnutrition, like fat soluble vitamin deficiencies. These help protect the lungs as well as certain saturated fats. The lungs depend heavily on natural saturated fats. Low-fat or vegetable oil diets in place of fatty acids in butter, coconut oil and animal tallows can contribute to lung problems. Fat soluble vitamins are found primarily in animal fats.

        • Gail Combs says:

Yes, Vit. D and the B vitamins. I have found I feel a lot better since I got off the carbs and now eat veggies, meats, nuts and cheeses. – fruits sparingly.

The carbs, especially wheat really make me sick now if I cheat.

        • Disillusioned says:

+1 Wow, that sounds a lot like my diet.

I eat meats with every meal, and have lots of colorful veggies. If I get a burger out, I have it in lettuce wrap. Zero breads, pastas, cereals, and rarely a potato (very rarely). For a snack (skipping a meal), I will occasionally have air-popped organic popcorn drizzled w melted Irish or French butter and salt & Parmesan. (That’s the most carbs I will get, from any meal I eat these days, and it is not that high.)

Fruits are a delicacy; and I watch which ones I eat. I have fresh squeezed lemon water 2-3 times a week, and will occasionally have berries. I have some dark chocolate occasionally (sparingly).

I don’t spare the oils, but I have zero vegetable oils (except EVOO, which I do use, occasionally). My staple oils are organic butter, tallow, lard, coconut oil, and a little extra virgin olive oil.

My BP went down a bunch in the last year, I’ve shed 24 lbs and still dropping. I’m feeling great. I used to have pizza and pastas, chips and breads all the time. None in the cupboard anymore, none in the pantry – all gone – out of the house over the past year. And that stuff is not that appealing anymore, either, like if I sample a bite off another’s plate (which means my glucose addiction is gone, gone, gone). 😀
