  1. Hugh K says:

Had to bail a long time ago on Little Green Footballs site. The folks at LGF are totally intoxicated with the global warming myth. Otherwise, a fairly moderate if not conservative site. Strange…

  2. He said the satellite record is not as accurate as the ground measurements. Probably because measuring the whole earth to get the temperature of the earth is not as accurate as averaging urban areas in 4 out of 7 continents.

    • SxyxS says:

Well,at that time they did not create the satellites to submit fake data to support global warming(as they obviously do now with new weather stations)

And according to their logic 1/10.000 co2 will heat up earth 5 degrees.
If you believe in this kind of Fairy Tales
than it is logical that ground measurements which cover an estimated 1/10.000% of worlds surface temperature are more accurate than a sattelite which covers 100%.

    • Rosco says:

And having almost zero data for the air temperature over nearly 70% of the Earth !

      • Rosco says:

And which moron – it seems like you are spoilt for choice !

      • Mark Luhman says:

No actually it is worst than that there is zero data for 97% of the earth, man only occupies 3% of the earth surface. The oceans take up 71% of the earth surface when you throw in Antarctic, Greenland Siberia, Northern Canada, the deserts and mountains you find we don’t occupy much of this earth. More people need to do long road trips across central and western Canada and the US and then look closely at the maps of the earth, most of the land does not have roads.

  3. mkelly says:

Got kicked off LGF years ago. Told Charles he did not understand lapse rate and something else. There was a gent with the handle Don Quixote that was all doom and gloom at the time.

  4. Mac says:

Oh, my God. A child should be able to understand that argument. Is that the refutation? Seriously? And then the guy goes “LOL”?

Steve’s is a perfectly constructed argument. Plotting the progression in height of a 60 year-old man from birth obviously shows an increase over the 60 years. However, is the man still growing at 60? Has he grown at all in the last 18.5 years? Nope.

My God, every day these people get more and more ridiculous and cultish. They’re all ignorant as hell and totally insane and delusional. Arguing with these dolts is an exercise in masochism. The cult member needs the cult. If 97% of actual real scientists suddenly claimed tomorrow that climate change is total BS, these mental cases would shriek even louder, and get even more violent and bullying.

The problem with leftists is that there always has to be something seriously wrong, which they have to correct right now or we’re all dead. They’re awfully controlling and frightened.

    • Disillusioned says:

Not only did Charles J LIE about satellite record being more accurate than the ground record (sure, it’s more accurate, because up to 50% of it is interpolated or extrapolated (read:pulled out of Gavin’s sphincter), he didn’t stop for a second and even try to understand Goddard’s perfect analogy. Although a simple, perfect comparison, It was too complicated for him. Lord forbid he seek any guidance to understand what Goddard meant about the PDO shift.

    • g2-9ed9acc685824c6663c51c5b093476cc says:

They were convinced it was happening. They started arranging their entire life-philosophy around the “fact” it was happening.

Then it stopped happening. But they couldn’t go back. It’s too embarrassing.

So they DENY the compelling evidence and insist it’s still happening, because that’s easier than admitting you were a fool.

      • annieoakley says:

And they are to arrogant to admit they are wrong.

      • Disillusioned says:

But their denial is so silly, because the majority of their own religious leaders have already admitted it is NOT still happening. And have floating many different excuses as to why. http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.com/2014/07/updated-list-of-29-excuses-for-18-year.html

      • It used to be easier to change your mind even after you made very confident assertions. Unless you were famous, shouted in the square or published your claims, it happened in private and not too many people knew. A retraction could also be made selectively and in private.

These days everyone can broadcast their claims, find fellow believers and publicly attack others for disagreeing. The record of our words is durable, public and easy to access. It takes more courage to admit we were wrong, especially if our beliefs were stupid and our attacks vicious.

The vain and insecure find it impossible to retract. Some of the people above will never admit they were wrong.

I pray for wisdom to see when I am wrong and for courage and strength to admit my errors.

  5. D. Self says:

This is the kind of person who Gruber was speaking off

  6. Jl says:

Charles-care to comment or refute what Steve said? I thought so.

    • Disillusioned says:

Chaz didn’t even understand what he said.

The borg have an interesting dichotomy going. Many warmists have accepted the “pause” – which is very apparent in the satellite data – and they have postured excuses and reasons for its existence.

But we get mathematically-challenged idiots on Twitter who read about Gavin’s warmest year ever claim (which, I believe even Gav admitted had about a 1 in 3 chance of being reliable), and they then go on squawking about how much more accurate the admittedly unreliable bastardized, UHI-corrupted land data are than the unadjusted satellite data. Amazing!

People like Mr. Johnson act as if the rest of the warmest climate community, who have been falling all over themselves with excuses for “the pause” – an admission from most in the AGW community that the warming trend indeed stopped 18 years ago – doesn’t exist.

So, Mr. Johnson, which of your leaders are lying? The ones who have admitted the pause is REAL? Or those who provide us with figures that they have admitted are unreliable? SMH

      • Arachne says:

The best summing up of Charles Johnson’s scientific acument can be found in a “flounce” by Earth2Moonbat when he left the LGF site for good — “You don’t know a proton from a crouton.”

      • Gail Combs says:

well he has 472 comments. Unfortunately you have to log in to comment and I am not about to.

        • Disillusioned says:

That group is the epitome of an echo chamber of closed minds. Locked shut. They don’t dare risk destruction of their sacred paradigm.

  7. Jason Calley says:

“Comparing a human being’s growth with planet’s atmosphere? LOL!”

Stunning. How many adults honestly do not understand the idea of analogy? Apparently more than we might think. Perhaps it too abstract.

Yesterday I was talking with a Progressive chap at work. He said to me, “You must be one of those people who think that the Constitution ought to be interpreted based on what they meant when they wrote it!” Yes, I was guilty… I tried to explain WHY that is a good idea.

“The Constitution is the set of rules for how our government has to work. It is the set of rules that we people agreed to about what kind of government we would have. It has a provision for changing the rules if we want to, but you can’t just arbitrarily say that the rules have changed.”

    “Why not?

“OK, suppose you were playing a game of poker. Poker has rules on how the game is played. If someone could just arbitrarily change the rules in the middle of the game, how could you ever have a fair game of poker?”

“Ha! But government is not a poker game! Government is not a card game. WE AREN’T PLAYING CARDS!”

He literally did not see the analogy. That was his refutation to my conviction that the Constitution needs a set interpretation. Why? Because government is not a card game.

    Sigh…

If you associate with mostly bright, thinking people, you will be constantly stunned by the ability of average folk to NOT think clearly.

    • As I understand it, someone correct me if I’m wrong, they removed analogies from the SAT a few years ago when they restructured the scoring. Struck me as a very sad, defeated change.

    • Yes. And if I say Copernicus was right when everybody else was wrong, just as an example of the majority not always being right, they accuse me of claiming to be equal to Copernicus. The analogy is lost.

    • Scott Scarborough says:

      Most.

    • B says:

That’s what the schools are designed to do to people’s brains. Wire them so they can’t grasp principles. This is that and that is this. There is no conceptual thought they just accept what they are told and think in compartments. No principles. Principles are dangerous.

Additionally people love Calvinball. I hate it but most people love being in a world of ever shifting rules. http://littlebobeep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Calvinball1.gif

    • Kozlowsky says:

Human nature has not changed since the constitution was written. Governance is an age old problem. Our system of checks and balances is a brilliant solution.

And for those who decry our intransigent congress — that happens to be a feature, not a bug, of democracy. Our government should remain in gridlock and perpetually be a debating club, and leave the people alone. Only if there is a clear mandate, a clear majority wanting something, should it act.

  8. B says:

I have learned that in general people cannot interpret data properly and are easily tricked with various analysis techniques. I don’t know why. I suspect it may be the schools but perhaps most people aren’t wired to see it. I’ve even learned not to make data analogies because they’ll then attack the analogy rather than see the lesson in it regarding data.

Steve has presented a perfect analogy for a data set that reaches a plateau and its interpretation but they can’t grasp it. This is the sort of response I get with similar attempts to describe how to look at data, how people use analysis to manipulate people, and so on. Their minds are either made up, they are embarrassed about being wrong, or they just can’t grasp that way.

    • SxyxS says:

      You are wrong!
      They can grasp the analogy
      but the won’t.
That”s how religious lunatics brain work.

No matter how the calculation//argument// is,no matter how good the analogy or how good the explanation is
they are only allowed to acceppt one result.

They have been indoctrinated that 2+2 =5 and that 5 is always and must be the only permitted result.
they will always only acceppt 5 as result,no matter how the facts are.

And they are even worser than religious lunatics,as religious lunatics usually are poorly/non -educated and never developed critical skills while AGW-cultists are well educated and have all mental tools and skills to break their chains-but they won’t.
The only excuse is that the western education system was systematically subverted to destroy critical thinking abilities,
just as KGB defector Golytsin warned many decades ago.

      • B says:

Gail refers to a book, one I’ve read a good amount of before the author’s writing style annoyed me too much. I prefer the way John Taylor Gatto’s presentation. Anyway one of the first steps was to impose a variant of the Prussian schools on americans. The more educated a person is, the less able they are to grasp an analogy like that. This started before the communist revolution in the Soviet Union. But we have to start looking at funding and such to understand how it’s all related.

Education became training and indoctrination. Climate scientists are generally institutionalized* people with lots of this education. Very well educated good at school institutionalized people are like religious people, they can only see one answer. Churches are institutions and religious people as we typically know them follow institutional beliefs. If the institution says 2+2=5, it’s five no matter how may times you hand them two sticks and then two more sticks and they count them out to four. If you’re clever in a debate you can do that to such an opponent. You can hand them the pieces and they’ll count to four but then tell you 2+2=5.

*they’ve spent their lives in institutions such as universities, schools, government labs, and so on).

      • _Jim says:

I think its more a case of the fanning-out at (widening of) the base of a triangle of ever-more dumber and dumber people (and of course, this includes teachers) on account of a couple of different factors, including too many stupid people survive into their so-called ‘adult’ years.

In earlier ages, the stupid culled themselves from the ranks of humanity due to simple errors involving almost every human activity, including eating …

Today, the government insures that most idiots survive to become a problem for humanity in general.

        • Gail Combs says:

Half of humanity has an IQ under 100 and the Progressives make darn sure their voter base survives and stays out of mental institutions so they can bus them to the voting booth.

    • Jason Calley says:

To us sceptics, the most amusing thing about Young Master Kragar’s drive-by, is that he no doubt thinks he has unleashed a withering attack that shames everyone here. Seriously, stop for a moment and consider. He actually though that comment was a blow for global warming. Just, wow….

Here is a great one that Kragat linked to:

Climate denial is immoral, says head of US Episcopal Church: ‘It is a very blind position

The highest ranking woman in the Anglican communion has said climate denial is a “blind” and immoral position which rejects God’s gift of knowledge.

Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church and one of the most powerful women in Christianity, said that climate change was a moral imperative akin to that of the civil rights movement. She said it was already a threat to the livelihoods and survival of people in the developing world.

“It is in that sense much like the civil rights movement in this country where we are attending to the rights of all people and the rights of the earth to continue to be a flourishing place,” Bishop Jefferts Schori said in an interview with the Guardian. “It is certainly a moral issue in terms of the impacts on the poorest and most vulnerable around the world already.”

In the same context, Jefferts Schori attached moral implications to climate denial, suggesting those who reject the underlying science of climate change were turning their backs on God’s gift of knowledge….

I hope these people realize that there are two satellite measurement systems UAH and RSS
    and
    1) they are in remarkable agreement
    2) they get most of the entire globe. not too many measurements in the Andes, Antarctica, in the Mohave desert etc, and almost a majority of land measurements are missing or are corrupted.
The argo float system has not showed warming.
    3) Hadcrut 4, The worlds central authority as been conceding no warming for 18 years, as have the bulk of the warmest scientists, like Trenberth.
    4) There have been over 50 reasons (excuses) as to why it has not warmed, beginning with the idea that heat is hiding over a half mile deep in the ocean, (now debunked) and recently blaming it on additional emissions from small volcanoes.

I usually do not pay attention to people who are unwilling to do the work to find out even a minimum of facts.

    • AndyG55 says:

And according to USCRN, the USA has been cooling at about 0.5ºC/decade since the “reference” system was established in 2005.

    • AndyG55 says:

What’s really funny is that because they are very obviously forcing USHCN to closely match USCRN, USHCN actually shows slightly more COOLING since 2005 than USCRN (about 0.8ºC/decade)

Even funnier is that BOTH show more cooling than UAH for the USA48
(UAH shows cooling of about 0.16ºC/decade since 2005)

  15. gator69 says:

Not able to see the planet for the cities.

  16. Andy DC says:

The fact of the matter is that between 1940 and 1977, clearly global cooling. Then between 1977 and 1997, there was global warming. Since 1997, flat. To take one 20 year period out of the last 75 years to “prove” global warming is the ultimate cherry pick, when CO2 has been constantly rising the entire time. By speaking the obvious truth, does that qualify me for banishment?

  17. omanuel says:

Again, Steven, I agree with your analysis, but innocent souls are no more morons than the

    1. Astronomers who believe stars are composed of hydrogen (the exhaust gas discharged to interstellar space)

    2. Nuclear physicists who believe that neutrons attract other neutrons (it is neutron repulsion that powers heavy atoms, some planets, stars like the Sun, galaxies and the universe).

  18. Owen says:

I don’t even try to talk to the global warming/climate change morons any longer. I gave up years ago. They don’t listen, they don’t want to learn. They’ve closed their minds to logic, rationality and common sense. I just don’t have any patience left for the fools. I admire Steve’s attempts to get through to them though. He has more intestinal fortitude then I ever had.

  23. NavarreAggie says:

    Tony,
I have a question, actually a couple of questions. In the past, you’ve compared this winter to a similar winter in the 1930s (1934, maybe?). Anyway, if I recall correctly, that year also had some blisteringly hot summertime temperatures.

Any thoughts as to what mechanisms might cause such a dichotomy in temperatures in a single calendar year? Any thoughts on the probably of recurrence this summer if we assume all that has happened in the past can happen again?

    • Gail Combs says:

A meandering jet stream and blocking highs.

HH Lamb, Jet Stream Meridionality & Extreme Weather

…In Europe, there is a curious change in the pattern of variability: from some time between 1940 and 1960 onwards, the occurrence of extreme seasons – both as regards temperature and rainfall has notably increased….

…These variations, perhaps more than any underlying trend to a warmer or colder climate, create difficulties for the planning age in which we live. They may be associated with the increased meridionality of the general wind circulation, the greater frequency of blocking, of stationary high and low pressure systems, giving prolonged northerly winds in one longitude and southerly winds in another longitude sector in middle latitudes.

Over both hemispheres there has been more blocking in these years… The most remarkable feature seems to be the an intensification of the cyclonic activity in high latitudes near 70-90N, all around the northern polar region. And this presumably has to do with the almost equally remarkable cooling of the Arctic since the 1950’s, which has meant an increase in the thermal gradient between high and middle latitudes….

Think the Polar Vortex bringing cold snowy weather this winter and last and the Blocking High that caused drought and a Heat wave in Russia in 2010. So far we have been lucky and escaped the worst the meandering jets can deliver.

      http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/08/19/noaa-on-the-russian-heat-wave-blocking-high/

This is probably why the switch to ‘Climate Disruption’

    • Blocking high pressure systems and extreme drought in the 1930’s. When the soil is dry, there is little evaporative cooling.

      • NavarreAggie says:

I suppose then, given the relatively low severity of drought conditions when compared to the 1930s, it’s unlikely that we’ll see a repeat of those summertime conditions despite a very cold winter for 2014-2015.
